Losing Weight During The Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

I have been on a liquid and vegetable pre-op diet for the past 11 days. I have followed that diet except I added a 1/2 cup of non fat cottage cheese (per day) because I was feeling extremely nauseous. I went to weigh myself for the first time yesterday and have only lost 3 pounds. Is this normal? I have read about so many people losing large numbers during the pre-op diet. I have had a really hard time losing weight during the past year (part of the reason I opted to have surgery), and am worried something may be medically wrong and therefore, the band won't help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can't compare yourself to others. Everyone is different. The preop diet isn't for losing weight anyway its to shrink your liver. So don't get discourage just keep doing what your doing. Good luck.

Some people are slow losers due to a terrible metabolism. Some people have an underlying medical problem. Have you gone to see an endocrinologist to investigate things such as insulin resistance, PCOS, hypothyroidism? It's a simple blood test. If you just have a terrible metabolism apart from exercise there is not much more you can do to speed it up.

I am a very slow loser even with my insulin resistance and PCOS under treatment. I lost 50 lbs the first year and so far 23 the second 6 months of my second year. I have about 25 lbs more to lose. Guess what? I am down almost 75 lbs! I feel like a million bucks. I do an hr aerobic workout 4x per week. I eat right 80% of the time.

Is this your first ever diet? If it isn't, 3 lbs in Just over a week is great. If it is, you at the very least have a sluggish metabolism. Just keep in mind that the band is a way to slowly lose weight and it won't do a lot of the work for you, aside from controlling how much you can eat at one sitting.

In considering surgeries, keep in mind you will have to have a lot of patience with the process. It isn't like gastric or the sleeve that weight flies off in 6 months.

Keep in mind that it someone has 100+ to lose because they have been downing big macs, they are going to drop a ton going on liquids. It depends why you are obese... Lots of factors to consider.

Good luck and just hope you are ready for the self improvement journey of a lifetime! I love my band :)

I stayed, strictly, on liquids and only lost 6 lbs in 2 weeks. Don't go hitting yourself in the head or comparing your loss to others. Everyone's body is different and so everyone's losses will be different. Best wishes on your journey! Karen

the previous poster is correct, comparing yourself to others will only bring you doom. i believe (the heavier a person is) they are more likely to lose (faster at the beginning). the pre and post op diets are for you to shrink the liver for surgery and then to let the healing process take place after surgery. please do not focus on losing weight during this time. sure its (great when it happens) but focus on you feeling better, your clothes getting looser then what the blasted scale says. (your scale changes all day long while u eat/pee etc).

you are you. that is all you can be. that is what is important.

the band will work if you help it.

I barely lost either, and after it was/is a very slow process....don't get discouraged. You didn't gain it in two weeks remember......best of luck.

I have the issue of gaining. I'm following the diet to the letter nothing extra they only put me on a semi-liquid diet yet its creeping back on I've called the dietician and asked her to call me. I didn't expect a big loss, but I also didn't expect to gain.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
