Consult With Surgeon And Pysch Consult

Recommended Posts

this morning was pysch consult. He was a nice man. wasn't expecting the tears that came!! I already know why and how I got here in this shape, but today, reality hit hard! hard one to swallow. realizing that I need alot more counselling in order for me to be successful. today also was first consult with the surgeon. I was already prepared prior to arriving that my decision was to get the mid-band. Dr. was great. I was weighed. we chatted about the band and it's success rate. He asked questions on how I got in the shape i am in..( apparently APPLE, not pear) he gave me info on the procedures. also some books to read, and wants me to join myfitnesspal.com. and to start dieting. I should lose up to 20lbs if i follow the 1900 cal. diet.and exercise one hr per day. he said to make an appointment in one month, and decide if I want the surgery or not. I actually was a little dissapointed. I went to the appointment already knowing I want it, fully prepared to go ahead with anything else that needs to go along with pre surgery testing etc.. I am confused. I thought that was what this consult was for? Is this the way all the surgeons start? maybe I was just overwhelmed and didnt understand? any insight?

cheers

Be Happy you have a Dr that wants you informed this is not anything to just decide on a whim. Also he wants to see if you are a good candidate , by asking you to follow a diet plan and excercise,

You said you felt you needed more consuleing the sooner you start that the easier it will be to follow the plan when you know why and how you use food. This is a journey that last for life the band is a tool and you need to work it and to do that you need to be informed what to expect. Your Dr. sounds like he wants that for you . Be thankful you have one that doesn't want to just cut and take your money.

At the next appt. if you have followed his instructions lost the 10lbs. and excercised and he and you think you are a good candidate then find out about after care that is so much more important then who puts the band in. Slow and steady wins the race..

Agreed! Use this time to seek more counseling and work on the diet plan. By the time you get the band you will be comfortable with diet and exercise making post op a little easier (aka bandister hell).

please don't get me wrong here.. I am extremely grateful that I have a great surgeon! I have been in counselling for a long time. have been researching for the past 2 years, and have family members that have had gastric surgeries, so I am well informed. I am also a nurse for 18 years.. I got the stamp of approval from the pysch consult yesterday as I am doing everything I should be. the Dr. also gave the approval. I am a candidate for surgery. I have a fat mass of 129 lbs.. 49.9% and BMI 45.9 i was just wondering if this was how the first appointments went.. I thought it would be getting measurements, setting up dates for overnight oximetry ( I have sleep apnea) and etc.. I understand that there is pre surgery diets, not a problem..I guess this will happen the next appointment. I guess I just asumed it would be this one.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
