Hiatal Hernia Repair & Lap Band Placement

Recommended Posts

If anyone had a hernia repair occur at the same time as their band placement....please share ur recovery tips.

I have a medicinal catheter in the skin of my belly & it is pumping a pain reliever for the next couple of days (I have to wear a tacky fanny pack lol)...

Anyway...its a tad painful! Just wondering if anyone has any tips to help recover faster....

MEMEMEE. I had a hernia (that I didnt even know I had) repaired. The dr told me when I woke up. I dont think I had any more pain (just kinda uncomfortable in my chest when I took deep breaths) but nothing those meds they were giving me couldnt fix. The pain in my shoulder for about 7 days hurt worse than the surgery. Otherwise, the repair was easy. At least it was to me. All the best.

I guess the pain is from the port placement....

I'm walking really well. The pain in my shoulder seems to have subsided...I'm using the Gas-X strips and it's helped A LOT!

Just scared to make movements with this pain pack attached...and can't wait til it empties so I can sleep comfortably!

I knew I had a hiatal hernia, but not as severe as it was. Instead of four incisions I have seven. Who cares! The shoulder pains were the worst, Lortab liquid was the savior for days two and three.

My doctor's instructions were followed completely and I have healed without issue.

Best wishes

I also didn't know I had a hernia, and apparently it was "significant" and took longer than the band to fix. Who would have thought?! I had constant heartburn for months before surgery, but that was my only symptom. I didn't notice any specific pain post-op. My pain wasn't bad at all, I came back to work on Post-Op Day 3. I'm not sure what was hernia repair pain and band placement pain. I did notice that keeping a rotation of hot and cold packs across my abdomen did help, but that was mostly for air and incisional pain.

I do have extra incisions....one is very close to my belly button! I don't really care about the incisions....

Thank you for the well wishes. Just wanted to make sure I'm not a special case! Lol

I am five days out from large hiatal hernia repair and band placement. The pain has not been too bad. I took Tylenol the first two and a half days. I am having trouble breathing deeply, as in a yawn or a sigh. I can't really do either and it hurts when either response is triggered. I am still struggling with bloating and fatigue. My age may have something to do with a slower recovery than some. I am 66.

I had a hiatal hernia repair and my band repositioned on 7/9. I have a pretty high pain tolerance I guess because I didn't use pain meds. I was groggy first day from anesthesia but otherwise felt pretty good.

The gas pains definitely came and went. It took a full week to be free of gas pain. I would just walk and walk and walk. Hubby also massaged my upper back to help work the gas out. It seemed to help. Kinda like burping a baby. ;)

Oh... the breathing deeply part. That was painful... so I would just breathe a little shallower for a few days. By day 7 I could breathe deep with no achiness!

Hope you are feeling better soon!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
