Hi, my name is Mandy and I went to my free seminar this morning. While there, I found out my weight (262, ugh) and BMI (42). They told me because I have BCBS of IL that it will pay up to 80%....BUT...because I don't have high bp, diabetes, or sleep ap, they won't pay anything. I was so stunned that I couldn't think of any questions to ask about if there is any other way to go through my insurance. They did tell me that they do financing through care credit, but that is not an option for me. Does anyone have any advice as what I can do next? Any help would be great. Thanks!

I would contact your insurance directly and find out for yourself. I've read of many people having Lap Band surgery covered by BCBS. It may be possible you need a 6 month doctor supervised diet to qualify because you don't have co-morbidities.

Definitely follow up with your insurance yourself and see what your options are.

Mandy,

Contact BCBS of IL directly.. I just had lap band surgery on 7/3 and it was covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of IL My BMI was 41 and i had no comorbids. It might be the policy that your employer has but it's worth double checking.

I contacted them directly serveral times and they were always very helpful.

Good Luck...

could you have lots of diabetes in the family? I agree with the others. Make sure you write down the names of who you speak to. Also could you get this in writing? YOu might want to talk to your boss and they might be ready to renew the contract and make changes..

When i had surgery which was awhile back I had BCBS but it was in PA. I know what the seminar says, however have you ever actually had a sleep test? I didn't know that I had sleep apnea until I got tested. So I would for sure look into it further and do not get discouraged.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
