Wow! That is ridiculous..I was self pay and my entire procedure including pre-op testing..surgeons fees..recovery..one yr of fills..everything was $13,500..I do know that they bill insurance companies more..but that seems outlandish!

I have BCBS too and everything was supposed to be covered. I got a statement that showed they weren't covering anything. I would not have gotten surgery unless it was covered. My doc has an insurance person and I'm starting my fight to have them pay what they said they'd pay for. Good luck!!

Crazy! I have BCBS as well. I was pre-approved prior to surgery. I just had the procedure this last Tues. Haven't received a bill yet but I hope they didn't do the same to me! I pre paid Dr $300, hospital $1400. I know there's much more due but your case sounds completely screwed up.

Yes, that is high! Were you pre approved? Because i had to wait for my insurance to send me a letter saying "yes" without it, my doc would NOT do it without it because i would be resp for the whole amount.... I paid like 1000 out of pocket, but my total doc bills were about 32,000.

I self paid for surgery, anesthesia, and 2 year refills for $13,000. Are they giving you a golden lap band? My goodness that is ridiculous. A bypass does not even cost that much and it costs a lot more than lap band.

I was banded on July 11th. Reading this I am now nervous I may get a bill. My insurance (Oxford united health care) sent an approval letter prior to surgery. What are the chances??

I have bcbs of michigan and I paid $39.00 I was pre approved and dieted for a year these hospitals and Drs charge HUGE amts to us insurance people and then settle for what ever they can get. So do not panic yet see how it all shakes out.

To be truthful after my year long diet the hospital that I was scheduled at refused to do my surgery because they were not making enough money on it. So I had to go to another DR and Hospital out of town and that took 3 more monthes for BCBS to then approve them. It is a racket here in the USA and so be patient and see what happens

I just got my bills and my bill from the hospital that was 19,800 and I have 2,300 to pay them. I have around 300 for anestisia and prepaid 600 to the surgeon. I have bcbs north Carolina but I was told all bcbs is different. Your bill seems very high. I would definantly check into it.

I just got my bill from the surgery.... $31,266.89. We shall see how much Medicare covers, I'm on disability. I almost fainted when I saw it...lol. Its only 3k less than what I bought my house for 20 years back.

My insurance paid for everything but I think the total surgery and one night in the hospital was like $12,000. I think the doctor wanted 3,000 and they paid him 2,000.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
