I had my banding yesterday

Recommended Posts

I was banded yesterday morning by Dr. Spivak. I guess I'm doing pretty well. I have an excruciating pain under my right collar bone and shoulder. I guess it's gas, I sure wish it would stop. I'm still trying to figure out the whole eating thing. I guess that will work itself out once I can start experimenting with foods. I was surprised to find that I had lost 7 pounds since my consultation. I never weigh myself. That's gonna have to change. Do most of you keep food journals? They told me yesterday that I should be eating between 800 and 1000 calories a day with 60/70 grams of Protein. This is going to be quite an adjustment.

Congrats Kathy! The shoulder pain from the gas is a big bummer... walk as much as you are able as that really is the best way to get everything moving in the right direction. In regards to the caloric intake... my surgeon focused on portion size in the beginning more than calorie counting... they did recommend utilizing Protein shakes immediately post-op to meet the Protein requirements you mentioned. powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein powder is awesome... it was the best that I found and post op I drank three shakes a day. www.unjury.com Once I was able to east the amount of protein required... I discontinued the Protein Shakes.

Wishing you a quick recovery!

Welcome to Bandland, Kathy! Glad to hear you're home and doing ok. The gas is a pain, isn't it? Rest a lot, but move around and walk all you can. It will help that gas go away. What's left is pushing on your diaphram, which causes the pain to radiate up into the shoulder.

Don't worry about eating just yet. Give yourself a few days to become used to drinking in small sips. Focus on keeping yourself hydrated right now, that's most important.

I keep a food journal, and am supposed to get between 800 and 1,000 calories per day as well. I haven't had any problem with this and I usually get in about 80-100 grams of Protein - without needing shake suppliments.

Did your doctor give you a post-op diet to follow so you know what foods you can eat and when?

I'll be keeping you in my prayers for a speedy recovery. *hugs*

Thanks for all the support. Darcy I'm going to look for the Protein Powder. Susan, I have a post-op diet that is liquids only for the first few days and then soft foods for 4 weeks. At the end of the first month I will be able to eat a more regular diet. I'm trying to be really careful about sipping until I can get a feel for my intake amount. At least I am home all week for Spring Break which gives me time to come up with a plan for work. The hard part will be lunch because I only have 25 minutes. I think I'll stick with Protein Shakes for lunch for a while just to keep it easy. Thanks again for your input. I'm glad I found this forum so I don't feel like I'm the only person with a band.

I was also banded on 3/13 and I have been drinking Protein Shakes every day. Yesterday I had baked fish with cooked carrots. I mashed both with my fork. It felt good to have something real to eat. My Dr. had me on liquids for 48 hours then mushies for 4 weeks which can include veges and fish.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
