First Steps Of Lap Band

Recommended Posts

I am going to see a recommended bariatric surgeon next week to start the process of getting the lap band. I have about 100 pounds to lose, and I am nervous and excited and I am ready to start this new chapter of my life.

I do have many questions for my doctor, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on what I should ask or if there was something you wish you asked and unfortunately found out the hard way.

Thanks!

You're a very wise lady for getting prepared with questions for your surgeon and educating yourself before surgery!

I would make sure you have a very clear cut post op diet given to you before you go in for surgery. This way, you already know what to expect and can shop for it before you go to the hospital.

In general, I would discuss any and all fears and/or concerns you have. Remember, the only stupid questions are the ones that go unasked, so definitely ask him about everything on your mind :)

Best wishes to you, I'm sure you'll have great success!

I second the diet thing - ask what, why, how long, etc. Does liquid really mean liquid only or does it mean mostly liquid, etc. because I'm surprised at how much variation is out there. Also ask about follow up appointments, what's included in price for the first year, how much other years are, fills, etc. what's covered by insurance or costs if you're self pay, etc. Good luck, great start to your journey!!

I kept a notebook with me for about 4 weeks before I met with my surgeon and I would jot down questions as they came...when I finished I had about 50 questions! Lol...I thought he was gonna think I was crazy..but he took my notebook and answered every question...I felt very informed going into surgery...I even asked if he ever had a patient die and if he was ever part of a malpractice suite...yeah I asked! Lol...I told him I already knew cuz I had googled him! Lol...feel free to PM with any questions..best wishes to you

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
