New And Thinking About Getting Banded

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

My name is Alyssa, I'm a college student and I'm seriously considering the lap-band, after some co-workers told me their stories about getting banded. I'm going to a seminar in early August, so right now, all I know is what I've read online. I'm hoping that I can have the surgery when I'm home for winter break (Dec. 14th - Jan. 22nd) but I'm not sure how realistic that would be.

I've been overweight my whole life - and it's come with it's fair share of being bullied, having low self-esteem, anxiety, ect. I've been dieting since I was in 5th grade. Nothing has worked, but my weight seemed to plataeu when I turned 17 and it's stayed around 250 lbs for three years. I cannot stand being afraid of everything, anymore. I am ready to start a whole new life.

Hi Alyssa!

Welcome to the forum!

I am 39 years old and was banded 6 months ago, but like you, I spent my entire life overweight. I was the chubby little kid that got teased and grew up into the miserable fat woman with horrible self esteem. For me, getting banded was the best decision I've ever made for myself.

Good luck with whatever your decision may be!

Hi! My name is Sonja and I've been happily banded now for over four years. I am 5'4" and my starting weight was 220. I now stay in the range of 135 to 140 lbs. Getting banded was one of the best decisions I have made. Living with the band successfully requires committment and change, but boy is the payoff worth it!

I am happy to share my experience with the band with anyone who is considering it.

FYI-Go to the forums tab at the top of this page. Almost anything you want to know about the band is in there someplace.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
