How Much Protein Per Day?

Recommended Posts

I will have my first visit with my surgeon Monday. His office emailed instructions for Pre-op diet that I need to start 5 days before surgery. I'm required to have 2 Protein Shakes per day. Is ther a minimum or maximum amount of Protein that I should make sure I follow for each shake?

Thanks

Dana

The most Protein your body and efficiently use at one time is 20-25g, so anything beyond that per shake is overkill. The trick is to find one that isn't loaded with sugar or super carb heavy (they all have some carbs).

I would start experimenting with different ones and see which you like, I personally love the unjury chocolate Splendor and still have one every morning for Breakfast (and I had surgery 6 months ago).

Best wishes to you!

You'll probably need minimum 60-80 grams of Protein per day. More won't hurt. But as stated, you can only absorb so much at a time so you need to space it out over the day.

Bob Harper (Biggest Loser coach) says to have half of your body weight in grams. for me that about 80 grams, I can usually do that.

He talks about how well the Protein fills and keeps you satisfied longer.

My Doc has always told me to lead with protein, lean as possible, then veggies or fruit. I love fish and feel it satisfies so many nutritional needs. I try to eat fish at least twice a week, I love salmon!!

How many carbs should I intake per shake? What is carb heavy? I want to try & do this correctly. I'm sure I will be told all of this when I go for my first doctor visit. I am impatient & I am ready to jump in.

Thanks

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
