Ugghhh I keep cheating on my liquid diet!!! I only have 5 days till surgery what is my deal!

hi kw, am gonna be tough--

you can stop (cheating) if you want to

make an effort to NOT cheat and follow what you are suppose to do.

say to yourself and remind yourself all you went through to get here.

the only person you are hurting is yourself.

my dr needed me to shrink my liver and if it wasnt, he wouldnt operate.

that sealed it for me to not cheatt

you've come this far, keep going.

please note that after surgery, cheating on the diet could prove dangerous

to your health.

I have to agree with the above poster. We all probably have unhealthy relationships with food and I know how hard it is - believe me I know but you've got to stop. It's about your health. Someone here has a tag line that says don't dig your grave with your knife and fork or something like that. If you knew it was life and death would you cheat? Is that brownie/chip/hot dog/whatever REALLY worth it? This is surgery and it is IS serious. Take care of yourself. Believe in yourself. Stop cheating now because you're only hurting yourself. And I know how hard it is, I really do it but do it anyway.

Up your Water intake if you feel you are hungry and if it's a sweet tooth problem, sugar free gum, mints, and popsicles were my best friends.

My physician weighs you as you walk in to day surgery and if you have not lost enough weight with the pre op diet she won't operate as you need to be discliplined as the band is only a tool and you have to do a lot to stay on track- c

Good luck with your journey

Here's the thing to remember, the pre-op diet is specifically to shrink your liver. Obese people also have very enlarged, fatty livers. In order to do the Lap-Band, the surgeon must be able to not only maneuver around it but physically move it out of his way. If it's enlarged, then you run a very real risk of serious injury to your liver. For this reason, many surgeons won't do the surgery if they don't think you've lost enough weight to shrink it. I've even heard of cases where the surgeon goes in, sees the liver is too big, and immediately closes the person without putting in the band because the risk of injury is too great.

So, it's in your best interest to get strict and stick to the pre-op diet. May as well get used to it because your post op diet will be even stricter- and also crucial that you stick to and not cheat so you heal properly.

All the above poster i agree with. Believe it or not this is the easy part. It does get harder after surgery you will need to depend ALOT on will power and the ability to say NO. You have traveled so far down this path your almost to the next stage keep going take it one day at a time tho. This is your surgery you have earned it make it work for you take advantage of this pre op diet to see what awaits you when you become banded if you cheat keep track of what you ate how much and why u ate what u did. Good luck!!

I felt the same way & cheated here & there. I successfully had my surgery 7/9 and back on the liquid diet for 2 more weeks. When we cheat, we only cheating ourselves. I wish I would've had more control then, cuz it would be easier now.

Good luck to you

It's really hard and I never thought I could make it the two weeks. Even my family was shocked when I did not cheat. Not one iota. My surgery was textbook and my liver was beautiful. My surgeon told me he knows by seeing your liver whether you cheated or not. I just felt like if I couldn't make it two weeks how would I make it the rest of my life. Good luck and hang in there!!

If you are cheating now, I would suggest postpone the surgery. You are not ready to change your life style.

The band is a tool, and you are only cheating yourself. This band is not a magic wand.

I fell back into bad habits, and it is terrible trying to back on track. I could have seriously hurt myself.

You need to realize this is the way you eat your whole life..

Good luck, it is an awesome tool, but you still have to do all the work.

My nutritionist from the Dr.'s office said that people have what's they call "last meal syndrome", where they will literally go out and eat a hamburger the day before. She said that they know when people do this as the liver tells all, apparently.

I agree that you should not cheat during your pre-op diet, but why does everyone automatically assume she ate a hamburger/fries/brownie and whatever else was mentioned. I am on my pre-op diet and today i had to cheat because if I didn't get something more substantial in my body I would throw up or pass out. I chose cottage cheese. Not great to cheat. but not everyone means going to mcdonalds when they mention cheating.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
