jeani81 93 Posted July 10, 2012 Went in for my first fill today and all went well. I thought it was going to be so much worse. The doctor helped me up and I drank my Water and got up to go. All was fine. I get out to the front desk and the last thing I remember was getting helped up off the floor. I had passed out in a room full of people. Has anyone else ever went through this? donna12 742 Posted July 10, 2012 OMG, first off I want to say I hope you are all right? But please don't say that is normal cause I go for my first fill Thursday and I'm so nervous. Nervous of what it will feel like and nervous about it all. Hope you are doing better.
Ronnie Rae Scott 8 Posted July 10, 2012 No it's not normal, I have had 2 fills and no passing out. Although I do fill a little weird after the fills its not anything big.
Toddy 758 Posted July 10, 2012 I read about something similar on a blog somewhere. Seems like it had something to do with the vagus nerve and the fix was taking an anti-anxiety medication before future fills.

Theresa13 14 Posted July 10, 2012 I have no pain and no problems with my fills, you will be fine. Talk to your MD about any concerns you have.
JessiG1983 50 Posted July 10, 2012 Anything that causes us to feel stressed can cause what is called a Vasovagal reaction.. "Vasovagal reaction: A reflex of the involuntary nervous system that causes the heart to slow down (bradycardia) and that, at the same time, affects the nerves to the blood vessels in the legs permitting those vessels to dilate (widen). As a result the heart puts out less blood, the blood pressure drops, and what blood is circulating tends to go into the legs rather than to the head. The brain is deprived of oxygen and the faintingepisode occurs. The vasovagal reaction is also called a vasovagal attack. The resultant fainting is synonymous with situational syncope, vasovagal syncope, vasodepressor syncope, and Gower syndrome which is named for Sir William Richard Gower (1845-1915), a famous English neurologist. See also: Syncope." Same thing that happens when someone passes out when they get a shot or blood draw.

MemphisFan 18 Posted July 11, 2012 My first fill is Thursday And I'm rather nervous about having a needle stuck in my belly. Should we eat before we get a fill or just have a protien hake or oes it matter?
jayres14 17 Posted July 11, 2012 My first fill is Thursday And I'm rather nervous about having a needle stuck in my belly. Should we eat before we get a fill or just have a protien hake or oes it matter? NO! NO! NO! Do not eat or drink ANYTHING atleast four hours before the fill!! Your pouch needs to be empty to keep anything from going wrong and to get know you are not too tight. Your stomach will swell and get irritated with the fill, which is why you have to liquids for 24 hours afterwards. The lanocane that numbs everything hurts... kinda bad. But it only lasts about 5 seconds. So count to five when he starts and you will get through. The big needle? You never feel it, I just don't look at it. Don't fear the fill, you need it to succeed! Sojourner 2,446 Posted July 11, 2012 Hope you were not injured... I have never had any complications with a fill...and not all doctors use Lidocaine to numb the area around your port. All you feel is a pin prick, like getting a shot. You do need to follow all of the physician instructions, and these can differ from doctor to doctor. My physician's instructions: nothing by mouth for a minimum of 3 hours before the fill, and then my doctor wants his patients on a liquid diet for the rest of the day AND the day after, then back to soft foods for a day. I don't really enjoy the liquid diet, but I feel he has his reasons for his directions...
