Newbie Here, 2.5 Weeks Post-Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello all! My name is Erin, I had Realize band surgery on June 22nd. I am down about 23-28 lb since then. (It's hard to determine....there is a 5-lb difference between my home scale and the doctor's office scale!)

A year and a half ago, I was at 385 and ready to make a change. I started eating right and exercising regularly. My left ankle started to bother me, to the point where I would limp on the treadmill. Several exams, x-rays, and an MRI later, it was determined that the major tendon in my left foot/ankle is weakened due to the stress my weight had put on it. I was put in an aircast (and later a custom brace) and was put on a stairs restriction, and forbidden from doing anything that put stress on my ankle...no treadmill, no bike, light walking. I did some Water aerobics, but even then I had to be really careful to avoid any stress. The orthopedic doctor said that I HAD to take the stress off of my foot, and suggested band surgery. He's hopeful that when the weight is gone, the foot/ankle issue should resolve itself. If it does not, then he can correct it surgically. If he were do to surgery on the tendon when my weight was so high, the root problem would still be there and it would all be for nothing.

Because I was so restricted as far as exercise, the weight started piling up, and I got up to 407. I was able to take off a few pounds, and had hovered around 403 for months. I got the Realize band surgery 2.5 weeks ago, and the doctor's office scale today had me at 374.2. :) I'm currently on the soft-foods stage of my diet. Yesterday I actually ate out for the first time and had a scrambled egg...and for the first time in over a month, I actually felt full!

I'm so excited to reclaim my mobility and my life! I'm only 33, but had been feeling much much older this past year. I feel more my age already!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
