relax first.

you are about to make yourself well,

follow your dr orders first off. take your dr meds and stay ahead of the pain.

get some gas x and heating pad, some pillows even. make sure you have popsicles

Soup (drained)broths.

but pain is different with everyone, some may have it worse than others.

i had the runs pretty good (sorry to share that) so have activa or align to help with that. ITS normal so

dont worry. same with shoulder pain. you may or may not get what i had.

i also took hot showers and let it fall down my back. heaven on earth.

here for you anytime.

again, breath and relax. this is the new you

I would advise staying on top of the pain, take the meds ON time everytime, and ask the nurses for them if they forget.... I let it go once and was in bad pain ( I'm also a wimp ) and don't be afraid to ask for more if you are still hurting.

I got the WORSE nurse.... she was a total B^#$&! And i had to ask for things 2 or 3x. If that happens, ask for someone else...

Gas X is a MUST... you will feel shoulder and chest pain and pressure due to gas.... I bought the strips you put on your tongue.

WALK!- If they ask you, get up and walk a little- it helps!

BEST OF LUCK!

Walking makes all the difference, even if you can only go up and down your hall. Body pillow pressed against your incisions will make night sleeping so much easier - or else push on them yourself... even when you're feeling better (for me day 4, some day 3- no you aren't going to die the first few days even if the gas makes you think so) be careful twisting or bending. I'm a week postop and I only hurt when I twist or bend wrong. Stay hydrated - even if you can't get anything down keep ice in your mouth and chapstick on your lips. Good luck. The pain etc. doesn't last too long. And don't forget popsicles!

Take your time sitting up and getting out of bed. Be patient with yourself in the bathroom (tmi, I know) because it HURTS. I remember I got my period hours after surgery! So irritated, but I survived, and you will too!

Congratulations- dont forget to plan for the new you!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
