I'm Too Picky For Liquids????

Recommended Posts

Wow, Its interesting that diff doctors have diff diets. I just had my surgery 6 days ago and my diet goes like this

day 1-3 - Clear Liquids only

day 4-14- full liquids + Protein shakes

day 15-27- soft foods + protein shakes

day 28-35- regular food trial

they told me that it takes 6 weeks for the body to heal from surgery so i need to be really strict and stay on my diet. So far I have been doing it and it hasn't been that hard. Just keep at it and it will pay off in the end.

Each doctor has a little different routine to follow. But for now, on a full liquid diet you are usually good eating the following things:

  • Water
  • Fruit juices, including Nectars and juices with pulp
  • Butter, margarine, oil, cream, custard, and pudding
  • Plain ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sherbet.
  • Fruit ices and popsicles
  • Sugar, honey, and syrups
  • Soup broth (bouillon, consommé, and strained cream Soups -- but NO solids)
  • Sodas, such as ginger ale and Sprite

Just re reading this and wanted to ask about the sodas part - I have been told repeatedly soda is a HUGE no no with the band. Does your dr. say those are ok? I'm just surprised.

Summer, I have never heard of a doctor allowing carbonation post op. You might want o check with your dr again.

I didn't read that closely enough -- just took it off a liquid diet site. Most dr's say no to carbonation right away. However, mine allows it now if I can handle it (I'm nearly two years out though). Sorry for the confusion :)

Agree about the soda since the carbonation is risky. It can make your band expand leading to a slipped band. Not a good thing.

Also, ice cream is considered a slider food. You can gain weight by eating a lot of it.

[*]Tea or coffee with cream or milk and sugar or honey

Ask your doctor if you can include these foods in your full liquid diet:

[*]Cooked, refined cereals, such as Cream of Wheat, cream of rice, oatmeal, grits, or farina

[*]Strained meats, like the ones in baby food

[*]Potatoes pureed in Soup

Once you're able to move onto mushies/soft foods you'll be able to add more foods and they will taste WONDERFUL ... tuna/ham salad type foods, potatoes with gravy, etc. Oftentimes people get so sick of the food they are currently on and move on to solid foods and it can hurt more than help. Keep going! :)

Hi summer

Did your doctor say you could have fruit juice ice cream ginger ale. I am confused I thought we were to avoid these and some others on your list.

Im so glad I found this site. I'm 9 days post op and I'm already sick of the shakes. I have 5 more days until I move onto mushy foods...at this point mushy never sounded so good. The 4th of July holiday was horrible being everyone was eating and there I was with my shake. I know I have to get through this and do as ordered by the doctors. Just been very tough. I dont think anyone likes the shakes lol....so I dont think one can be picky lol. I guess we all have to hang on and ride it out....together :)

I hated that stage. I was very hungry and it sucked. That phase was not fun but I lived through it. I don't like those types of food either. I ate alot fat free refried Beans once I got to the mushy stage. I went to full liquids in day 2 and mushy foods were a few days after that so I wasn't tortured for long.

Good luck!

Be grateful for what you CAN have!! I was 2 weeks liquid diet PRE op and 2 weeks liquid POST op ( I'm on week 1 of the post op) and my liquids have been and are only shakes, SF jello/pocicles, broth, water!! I've been doing it for 3 weeks now and have one more week... So I know it's hard...but you have to concentrate on what you can have and think that it's temporary! Besides...how many people can say they survived a month of liquids?! I CAN! It feels good to accomplish soemthig that seemed so impossible at the beginning! So look at what u have done and be proud of yourself!

I'm 11 days out and totally feel ya. I've been pushing thru the last few days by having yogurt for Breakfast since that is the only thing that is close to having a real breakfast. I go use the elliptical around lunch time since I'm at home and then have a Protein Shake after. This part has been working well since afterwards I feel revved up on pushing myself to be healthier and I feel full after drinking it. Then by dinner... well... soup's on. By dinner I am tired of liquids but, hey!, we only have a few more days left of this! Keep you're chin up!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
