Just Can't Get My Energy Back From Surgery

Recommended Posts

I was banded June 13th and I just can't seem to get my energy back. I am on solid foods now however with that being said I am eating only fish and canned chicken (making chicken salad) and Protein Shake for Breakfast or an egg and then cottage cheese for my other meal. I would like to start walking or exercising some but I just don't feel up to it, all I want to do is sleep. Help!

Here's my help -- be kind to yourself!! Don't worry about exercise right now. Yes, it's great to do it, but don't make yourself nuts. You WILL lose weight. You WILL get more energy. And you ARE still healing. This isn't going to happen overnight. Just try to really listen to your body and heal for now. You probably need the rest... Exercise will come with time.

... are you taking a Vitamin supplement?? I remember how tired i was for quite a while after surgery, i wasnt exercising either. i still get tired, even now. I wouldnt be too concerned. Just give your body time to heal and adjust... this new way of eating... and living... is a biggie. Theres more to it than we realize. Hormone changes (dont understand why but there often is..) and all that ... as well as healing from surgery.

Rest up as often as your body tells you it needs to. Take supplements and your Protein shakes... and eat what you can manage. Time is a great healer. Im just 3 1/2 months out from surgery now... im still feeling some effects at times. Thats o.k. im prepared to wait, as long as it takes. judy

exactly we are expecting to much of ourselves, we had surgery! we invaded our body and now it has to take take to get back to normalcy as it now will be. I was very slow to start exercising but yet like you felt guilty that I should be further along, It will take time, we have to stop and take time for ourselvesnot because we want to but because we need to.

You are right on track.. good luck!

Hello Newbies! You are still in the healing stage. If you have not had your 1st followup, I would suggest that the only exercise you try is walking. Anything else could hurt you! Take care, it is hot and you will slow down. (unless you are in Austrailia where it is winter). Try not to rush it. Good luck, and take care as I said. Karen

I was banded

6/14. I went out and cut the grass in the fl heat this morning and i am beat! It happens to me a lot when I try to exercise. I just have to rest after. Thank God I am a teacher and off for the summer! I don't know what I would feel like If I was working every day!!!

My 3 yr anniversary is next month. Still loving my band. Yes, take it easy as your body needs time to heal and adjust. The only thing I did prior to my first fill was walk around my yard. The doc told me NOT to excercise and I didn't. However, he did encourage me to walk as that helped to relieve the terrible gas pains. My best advice... follow the docs orders to the letter.

I was banded on April 9th and returned to work on April 16th. I didn't feel like myself until mid-May (approximately 5 weeks after surgery). I did mild exercise after surgery (i.e. Walk Away the Pounds DVD) because I found it helped with the gas pains post-surgery. It was hard to get back into my routine following surgery but eventually it all comes back. At 2 months pos-surgery I was back to working overtime and feeling more energetic than ever.

As everyone else has said so far, you need to listen to your body and keep talking with your doctor.

Good luck!!

I am 6 weeks out and I am able to exercise, actually walked 6 miles in 95 degree heat the other day. Are you eating fruit? I know we are supposed to eat Protein first, but your body needs, fruits and veggies. This is how I make sure I get my fruit in daily, I make 2 smoothies a day, 1 apple, 1 banana, and either blueberries or strawberries. In addition I add a little Water, and 2 to 3 packs of equal/splenda and a greek yogurt (protein) I highly recommend making smoothies, and using 2 or 3 different fruits, this also has ended my bouts with constipation...Good Luck!

I do think my body is lacking in something, can pinpoint it. Plan on talking with my dr Thurs when I go in for a fill. Thanks for the recipes of the smoothies, I will try that.

Have you had your Iron levels checked? Personally disagree that you should'nt exercise at this point. My doctor wanted me to be walking the day after surgery; and in general wants 30 mins. 7 days a week minimum.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
