? Re: Recovery W/ Hernia Removal And Band

Recommended Posts

I just had a hiatal hernia removed and got banded today. I am wondering if the recovery process is longer?

The hernia repair shouldn't set you back any longer than the lap band recovery. I did have some discomfort in my left shoulder up into my neck post-op (about a week out) and the doctor said initially that it could be air trapped around the hernia repair. When the pain persisted, and started again after a fill, he said it was due to vagal nerve irritation.

It's hard to tell if one or the other is causing discomfort because they're so close to the same area.

I had 2 hernias repaired, some adhesions removed and the band surgery and I definately felt that I had additional pain. Took me a good 2 weeks to feel half way normal again. I guess it depend on where and how big the hernia is. And your pain tolerance....I consider myself to have a high threshold of pain and I was unprepared for the amount of pain....so prepare yourself for the worst and hope for the best....That way you aren't surprised like I was.

I had a repair and also had an on Q pain management system and it hardly took any time at all. It's not a big deal. And then no more heartburn! Good luck

The hernia repair was the worst for me. My abdomen felt fine after 2-3 days but I'm post op day 12 now and I still have neck pain. It is much less worse than it was but for the first 8 days or so I had pain on a 10/10 scale in my left neck/shoulder.

I had a hernia reparied and I think it took a little bit longer to recover but I am only 12 days post op and I feel about 95%. For some reason I can't sleep and it's driving me bonkers!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
