newskinnygal 51 Posted July 2, 2012 I'm scheduled for surgery around the time I should get my period. I'm on BC, I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to skip the placebo pills and go straight to another pack so I don't have a period. Has anyone had surgery during your menstrual cycle? I heard you can't take levonex, the anti blood clot medicine during your period....I don't know what to do.

sman342 13 Posted July 2, 2012 My doctor had me discontinue the pill at least 2 months prior to surgery due to risk of blood clots (surgery is a risk factor AND BC pills are a separate factor as well). I was told more than once to WATCH OUT because our fertility increases exponentially as we lose weight. When I saw my Ob/Gyn before surgery, we discussed Mirena. It's an IUD and I just need to schedule for that. Might want to consider that.
newskinnygal 51 Posted July 2, 2012 My doctor told me not to stop the BC...was anyone else on BC during surgery? 1 sman342 reacted to this
Lianne 34 Posted July 2, 2012 I had my period during my lap band surgery. They did not let me wear underwear or a tampon or anything. But when I woke up, they had put a pad between my legs. It was very embarrassing, but I'm sure I wasn't the first one that they had had on the table who was menstrating. 1 ☠carolinagirl☠ reacted to this
kah1213 311 Posted July 2, 2012 I was told to stop birth control pill 10 days before surgery. I was able to resume about 2 weeks after surgery.

yvonne74 73 Posted July 2, 2012 I wasn't told to stop taking the pill before surgery. My period started the morning of surgery and they wouldn't let me wear underwear/pad during surgery. They told me they would put a pad down there for me but when I woke up I didn't have anything under me.
Cazzy 725 Posted July 2, 2012 You will need to speak to your own surgeon/doctor as we all seem to get different advice and u will need to follow his guidelines on this, good luck with the surgery
SageTracey 608 Posted July 2, 2012 A lot of us get a period off cycle with the weight loss before surgery so it seems to be quite normal for us to end up on the table with our period. That means the surgeon and staff have seen it all before, so nothing to worry about.
PattyGirl66 1,243 Posted July 2, 2012 I really really hope I get my period soon, like now before my surgery. Oh it will be such a disaster if I do, LOL
NWgirl 574 Posted July 2, 2012 I was allowed to take my birth control continuously. I was told by my gynecologist that traditional birth control pills may not work correctly after surgery because some people's body absorb hormones differently. She said the best bet would be to do an IUD or use NuvaRing.
Krussell19 217 Posted July 2, 2012 If you are on your period they will just lay a big pad down. Its no biggie for them very common and plus they see much worse daily. 2 ☠carolinagirl☠ and BandedInTX reacted to this
smellslikecoffee 43 Posted July 2, 2012 My doc said I'm allowed to stay on BC, nuvaring, but to be extremely careful cause pregnancy is at a all time high after lapband surgery! If you have time, maybe switch to nuvaring and you can just keep it in and skip a period
