How Soon Can You Work-Out Post Op

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm getting banded July 25th (can't believe it, long journey) In your experiences how soon were you able get back to your workout routines besides walking?

Also another off topic question. I've heard all about the pb'ing & sliming. I'm sure I'll understand more post op. But, do you slime even if you’re not pb'ing? Are the two directly related or two completely different reactions?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Can't wait to be on the flipside of this surgery process :)

I was allowed to walk as much as I wanted but nothing else for the first month. I'm just 1 month post surgery and I worked out with the trainer yesterday!

This is good to know, I'm scheduled to have my surgery Aug. 23rd and I guess I'll be a walking fool until I'm able to start running again.

I was told no hard demanding workouts for 6 weeks. Easy cardio and small weights are fine (don't lift more than 20 pounds the first six weeks also). I know every doctor is different though, it seems like mine is super cautious which is fine with me! :)

Pleased keep in mind I was doing an hour of cardio daily before surgery. Day four went back 45 min-1 hr on treadmill (gradually increasing speed) for the first week. Next 7 days moved to elliptical (I was concern about having good balance after abdominal surgery). Day 15 I was back in the pool (I do lap swimming).

My doctor wanted me walking on the treadmill the next day for at least 30 minutes, they even had me walking that day after the surgery

I have the 20 lb weight restriction for the first 4 weeks. Walking the first month, everyday. Then at the one month mark cardio at least 4 days/week. I'm ready to get back to my Power 90.

Good Luck!

I've been walking a couple of miles a days since Day 3. I'm on day 8 now and still not up to my usual 15,000 steps a day... only about half that, really. I haven't hopped on my elliptical yet because this seems like something that would be somewhat taxing on my core, but soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
