I have been overweight most of my life. Weight was like a roller coaster. Always either gaining or loosing. I was banded 11/16/09. I lost 107 pounds in 10 months. That was eating ultra low carb and low fat and working out just about everyday. I have regained about 40 of that loss. I am struggling to get back on track. I think when we want to loose weight we want it gone yesterday. It just doesn't work like that. This time I am eating a balanced diet, still excersising. I feel like I never really learned to eat like a "normal" person. What I am saying is patience is key. Find a healthy diet you can stick to for the long haul. I have done the just shakes thing and couldn't stick to it (except the post op diet) and ended up feeling deprived and bingeing.

Being banded should mean that you no longer have to do liquid diets and go hungry. It may take a while to reach the proper level of restriction for you to be in that state, but have patience. The band is not a set it and forget it procedure. It takes months of aftercare to get it right. After 6 months I finally started losing weight, but I didn't lose it steadily. On the whole, the trend was down. but it would be a few pounds one week, none the next, up one, down two..same, same, same, down three, up two.

My goal was to concentrate on an eating plan I could live with for the rest of my life. Yes, I wanted to lose weight, don't get me wrong. But I also knew that with proper eating habits comes weight loss. It's been 4 1/2 years. I've been maintaining my weight loss for about 2 1/2 now, without thinking about it much. I try to make fairly healthy choices. I quit when I get my satisfied signal. I see my surgeon when he tells me he wants to see me.

I think it's important to take a deep breath and realize that this is a lifelong journey and not a quick fix. And even more important -- you can't compare your weight loss with anyone else. Each person is going to lose weight at a different pace ... some more quickly than others. The goal is to stick with it and be in it for the long haul. You're doing a great job - especially for not having a fill yet. Good luck and keep going!

Remember we didn't put the weight on in one day, so it's not going to come off in one day. It taks time and and losing it slow is good. Good luck to you on this journey!

You should be following whatever post op diet your surgeon gave you, regardless of what anyone else says or even if you are hungry. The first 4-6 weeks after surgery are for healing, not losing, and a big part of that is following your surgeon's diet instructions.

As far as losing, once you're on normal foods and start getting fills it gets easier. However, if you haven't met with a nutrionist I highly recommend you do so. The band may help you to eat less but it's not magic and can't force you to make good food choices. The band is just a tool and it's up to you to change your eating habits into good ones for a lifetime.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
