Stomach Acid/gerd

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone.. I was trying to find a forum to post a ques re: the title above.. Not sure if this is the most relevant if anyone has other suggestions please let me know! Question is I rec'd my first fill last wk and feeling comfortably restricted, however this is the first time I'm feeling the effects of excess stomach acids and having it bother my throat. I had surgery on 5/3. The MD prescribed prevacid immed post op.. I took it for several days and stopped bc I felt fine (yes I understand prevacid is for preventative measures). Now w this restriction, I started taking the Prevacid again however I've been reading any discomfort due to this should be alleviated with an antacid..ie TUMS.. So:

A. Is taking TUMS OK?

B. Are there foods that can help minimize this feeling?

C. Are there foods to exacerbate this feeling?

D. How long should this last before I reach out to the MD or nutritionist? Ps.. I also have a cold so I'm trying to work thru that before calling th MD.

Thanks in advance!

Not to scare you, but I am under the impression that you shouldn't be having gerd at all post surgery - the band effectively separates the stomach from the bile so unless the band is misplaced you should not have those issues. I have had reflux only when I go to sleep too soon after eating and lie down. Did your surgeon do the test where you drink something and they check that everything is placed right?

Yes and everything was ok.. But between this cold and the new adjustment it may be a case of simple indigestion and post nasal drip just irritating my throat.. Does I really don't know much bout GERD can one actually feel symptoms in their stomach? I'm only feeling irritation in the back of my throat and slight heartburn type symptoms..

It might be that u could be eating slightly too much in one go and the food is slow to go down into your main stomach, i had this a couple of times over the past few weeks and i can tell its because i was feeling very full. Also eating highly flavoured spiced/salty/fatty food can all add to the problem, try having 5 smaller meals a day and not eating anything acidic like fruit too .. It migh tbe also that u need a small unfill, if u are concerned go back to your dooctor and discuss with him :) Colds create a lot of mucus so could be your pouch is struggling a little with that too ..

I would think that waitng till your colds clered up then re-assessing how u are might be best, u dont want to get unfilled unecessarily.

Ive had GERD for ten years and did a lot of research about it before doing the band. While it may get better for those who already have it, there is no guarantee it will go away (thought it does with gastric). Sounds to me like you're just having some mild heartburn (if it was actually GERD you would have an upper endoscopy, biopsies, and you'd be curled over wanting to die at least once throughout the experience) and something like Zantic 150 would help for immediate relief. You can also try Prilosec OTC 14 day regimen to kick the heartburn (whether its associated with the cold or not).

You can find all sorts of foods online that help or hurt: i.e. no Tomato sauce, acidic foods, orange juice, spicy food, etc. milk can help calm symptoms temporarily.

hope that helps!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
