Sour Grapes?

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking long an hard about WLS for a long time and after my pregnancy I decided it was time to give in. I decided to start the ball rolling to get a Lap Band. I started my research and got my information night scheduled. When I was having dinner with my family, my sister brought up that she'd heard I was considering WLS, and my father chimed in that his doctor told him he should go get a Lap Band because he has bad knees (he retired and has done nothing but sit on his lazy boy eating ice cream for 3 years) and has sleep apnea. Meanwhile I'm still online researching like crazy online, go to my information night, set up all my appointments, and get my initial physical. Today I saw my dad and he asked what the surgery I'm getting is called and I told him, and he goes, "Oh! That's the one my doctor told me to get! Yeah, she told me that she could fix it so that I can get the surgery right away with my Keystone East insurance because of my sleep apnea."

Okay. It's got to be sour grapes or something on my part. Seriously? You don't even remember what the procedure is called and you're just going to toddle in and have it done and skip over the months of preparation everyone else has to go through? Yeah. We'll see. *SIGH*

sorry, i laughed out loud @ "toddle in". but yes, i totally understand what you're saying. I am at the beginning of this process too and jumping through a lot of hoops (probably many more to come) and I do get a little jealous when some people seem to get through everything so easily. definitely happy for them though! best wishes to you.

He's going to have to do all the tests and doctor's appointments you and everyone else does. What makes you think he won't?

With each doctor being so different its hard to ever gage how long it will take for anyone! Good luck to both you and your dad!

Tough love comin' your way honey............... i think you're very, very smart for researching, doing your homework and knowing what you're getting into BEFORE you get banded. I did all that too , and so I was very comfortable and relaxed about being banded 7 months ago. I also had a very good idea what to expect after surgery, so i think that added to my overall easy time so far. I learned a very hard lesson years ago that just because somebody had an M.D. after their name doesnt mean they know what they're doin'.(Different procedure all together .) That bein said, YOUR research is for YOUR journey, not your Dads. HIS research (if any) is done for HIS journey. He may or may not have different issues, problems or success's than you, but at least you'll know what to do for YOUR body. Im down 47 lbs, look and feel 100 % better. Best decision ever !!! Good luck !

I totally agree witht he above poster...this is nothing to rush into..It amazes me the number of people who don't research this and then get it and regret it cuz they didn't realize all it entailed and that it's not an easy fix...best wishes on your journey.

Trust me this is an ongoing learning experience. At three years it seems I learn something new daily. The knoweldge I have and the research I've done has made this so much easier for me. Many things will happen throughout that can make you loose your mind if you aren't informed. I think that many of those who have problems with the band may not have had as much info as they needed to meet the issue of this "tool". If ice cream is his best friend and he can't make a break, he will just be wasting his time with this. I understand your feelings and they are justified. Please keep in mind...KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!! You will be dropping pounds and getting healthier while he is getting stuck and pb'ing daily. So let him "toddle on", you will be fine.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
