Trying To Sway Me Towards A Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I just had my first visit, which was a physical with the nurse practitioner. She asked me which surgery I was thinking about, and I told her the lap-band. When she asked why, I said because it seemed a lot less invasive. She said it's probably best I not go with all the re-routing of the RNY on account of I'm still young (29), but said that I won't lose as much weight with the band and should maybe go with the sleeve because it's better and I'll lose more. Confused as to why she said RNY is not preferred right now, but removing 75% of my stomach is... ugh. Sometimes when people discuss the statistics of the lap-band, it's like they're trying to tell you "YOU WILL ONLY LOSE 45% OF YOU BODY WEIGHT!" Which isn't true, right? I mean, that number is an average, correct? I think it seems like you get what you give with the band. I know one girl so far that had it done, and she lost about 50 pounds, and probably had 100+ to lose. Before surgery she was stuffing her face with Chinese, pizza, and subs. After surgery, she at the same stuff.

IDK, I think I'm going to put my faith in the band and if I have to revise to a sleeve some day, well, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I got my band in 2006 and lost well over 100 pounds. My plan was, if the band didn't work for me, I would revise to the RNY. Now I have gained some of the weight back due to (unrelated health issues) an over fill, dilated pouch etc. When I decided on the band back then, it was purely financial, I was self-pay and had it done in Mexico. Had I been able to, I probably would have opted for the RNY because my BMI was over 60, however I was not willing to have that done in Mexico and the cost in the US was too high. Now I also am considering revising to the sleeve if I can't get my band to keep working for me. It is a tool and you do have to change your lifestyle period. Even with the RNY and the Sleeve they all involve a long-term commitment to changing your lifestyle or they won't work for you either.

A lot of folks on here have lost over a hundred pounds. I should lose close to a hundred within my first year as well. I think the idea you don't lose much weight with the band is a myth that won't die for some reason. Just my opinion.

I have wanted the Band all along and have done all the research which lead to be cementing my decision. MY surgeon was great and also agreed. Once I got to an appointment with a nurse practitioner she was pushing me to consider sleeve. I'm also 29 and she kept pushing even after I said I wasn't interested in that option. She even told the psychiatrist so when i went for my consult (same appt) he had me do the education questions for the sleeve too "just in case" I was like, WTH? Don't let them push you into something you're uncomfortable with. If your Dr/Surgeon agrees then I wouldn't worry about it.
