My $18,000 Birthday Present A.k.a Banded On June 14, 2012

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow will be two weeks out from surgery. I was banded on the day after my 43rd birthday.

I was disappointed because Endo - Ethicon (Realize manufacturer) discontinued its' website. I just found this forum today.

But here's the rub - does anyone have anything nice to say about the gastric band?

One poster said they were getting gastric sleeve w/o thought to GB because soon we'll see lawyers on TV advertising to litigate for lap-band problems. WTF!!! I'm in a bit of a panic.

I was banded a month ago and have found it to be a fabulous tool, although nothing will have a unanimous fan base. What have you heard was wrong with the band? What kinds of problems?

Every surgery will have some risk factors associated with it...and one does need to weigh the very low rate of complications and mortality from band surgery against the very real risks to one's health and well being if the obese individual does nothing to loose weight and improve their health.

That being said, one will continue to lower their odds of having significant complications if they follow their surgeon's post op instructions, and the dietary rules which come with living with the band.

I've been banded for just over 4 months...and have no regrets for my decision to have this surgery. I have had band related complications since then, but that was more from the systemic effects of weight loss and not the band.

Relax, follow your diet, drink plenty of Water, and get your exercise in. You will not regret this journey...

Best wishes...

Don't worry about that, some people have nothing but negatives to say and seem to want to cause problems and panic when it's not even a procedure they're having. And like many message boards, you often see more negative than positive posts because people complain more vocally than they state the positives. Look at the success stories to see some great posts. And there are many positive, helpful people here and they well outweigh the negative nellies!

I was telling her not to worry about your "shock comment" about litigation because you're obviously here just to stir up trouble and you have nothing better to do.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
