Caffiene After Lap Band.

Recommended Posts

Everything I have been told is to limit caffeine to 1 cup a day. You may have Decaf.< /p>

I stopped coffee just before my surgery. Went through a 2 day head ache and don't plan on returning to it. I used coffee (with way too much flavored cream) as a way not to eat Breakfast but just ended up eating more later.

I am sure someone will post that they had adverse effects; someone else will say none - because it's a unique experience for every band patient.

I am a caffeine fiend and immediately after the surgery when I was healing I didn't have caffeinated, but I moved on pretty quickly back. I don't see any harm in it, you just have to stay hydrated. Also, when you are tight you need a hot liquid to loosen up, particularly in the morning. I always have a big coffee in the morning.

I had resolved that I would not give up my coffee entirely post op...though I did take a 6 week hiatus from it while on the liquid diet and the 2 weeks until I began to eat solid food again.

I still enjoy my coffee every morning...but I have limited myself to the once a day maximum.

My surgeon's concern post op for drinking caffeinated coffee was that it was a stomach/pouch irritant, and needed to be avoided. Though it may very well also act as an appetite stimulant. Different doctors have different opinions...

I have a couple of cups in the morning, and sometimes one at night. Haven't found any issues with it at all!

Interestingly, I learned that caffeine stimulates the pyloric valve to open which is a no no for hiatal hernias and bandsters. My band doc said no caffeine and my regular doc said 1 cup of coffee a day. I have not had any diet pepsin since 2 weeks before surgery and drink 2 cups of Decaf instant coffee a day.

I drink coffee every day. In fact, I was never told by my surgeon or medical team that I could not drink it or needed to limit it.

I never gave up caffeine. I've never heard of this before.

This is what my Doc and the folks at the center say as well. I switch to Decaf back in April a few weeks before surgery. Figured I had to give it up I might as well get used to it.

my doctor said fine to drink tea and coffee and i drink it as and when i want it, i dont make it strong tho and i dont drink it black always with skimmed milk.. it suppresses my appeetite nicely i use it as a filler in between meals and to relax my band first thing in the morning ..

The advice should come from your doctor so just do as they say and u should be fine .. we all react differently to caffine, i would say the caffine in soda drinks is worse for u as it is there as an additive.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
