Recommended Posts

My consult is July 10th, thet told me it may take up to 6 or 8 wks to b approved b4 surgery. My question is I take around 13 meds, for various reasons, will this affect the outcome for approval?

No it won't affect the outcome. It may just make it a little more difficult on you. If any of the meds are to stabilize something then you may need to be stabilized before they can do surgery

Thank u so much, most r do to my weight, chclesterol, throid, blood pressure etc, But others are for ddd, (pain) n anxiety, just wondering if the surgeon would deny me because of this or make me stop taking anything.

Just make sure u r honest and tell them everything you are taking.you may be denied or you may be delayed but if you r not honest you can be in serious trouble, have a drug reaction or something.take in a list with doses reasons and times or the actual bottles with you .

The first thing is to be honest with your lapband surgeron.. From the date of consult to date of surgery was six months for me. Each insurance has its own requirements. Being on all the medication has its ups and downs. it might help you get surgery.. adn depending on why you are the meds could affect how your body heals and reacts to the anesthia. *can't spell sorry.. You will probably be required to have all of your records forwarded to your lapband doctor. So, be prepared for that. The more information the doctor has the better he can help you. Also depending on your size your doctor might require a preop diet. I had to do four weeks.. my surgeron requires all patients. however if your bmi is over 50 you have to do it for six weeks... you will probably have to speak to a nutritionist, pscyhiatrist, cardiologist, pulmonary doctors just to name a few. especially depending on your conditions.. Stay positive even if you have a set back.. Don't give up.. if you want something bad enough you might have to fight.

I wouldn't worry about the meds but like everyone else said make sure you're honest with the Surgeon. Process to get banded is not quick by any means. I had a 6 month monitored diet requirement by my insurance and my doctor required me to lose 5% before he would do the surgery.

Other things that had to be done prior to getting a surgery date was Psych exam, Nutritionist visits, Upper GI, EKG, Chest x-rays, ultrasound stomach and a lot of blood work. Finally after all that was done they submitted to my insurance for approval. For me it was a little over 7 months from seminar to surgery day.

I know some people had to do additional tests as well. I know some had to have a sleep study done to see if they have Apnea. I was already diagnosed and used a CPAP before starting my journey.

By the way...if you're going to be depending on insurance to help with the costs believe it or not any issues you have will just help your cause in getting approval. High cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea. All that stuff just makes a stronger case for the surgery so make sure you tell them everything even if you find it embarrassing...

I take medications daily for anxiety and my thyroid. I had my thyroid removed in 2009 because I had Graves Disease. I need a replacement every day for the rest of my life. They didn't say anything about the lexapro. I will continue to see my endocrinologist to track the prescriptions that he has given me.

This did not affect my approval and doesn't seem to be affecting my surgery as I am schedule to go in less than two weeks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
