Surprise Bill In The Mail

Recommended Posts

I am post op 3 months now and just recently received a surprise bill for the surgical assistant for $2000.00. My insurance will only allow $250.00 payment. I called the billing dept for this assistant and received a rude customer service rep stating that they will not accept any payment lower than the total amount due since the SA is not covered by my insurance. I did not have the opportunity to pick out the SA only my doctor did. Has anyone else experienced this predicament? That's $44.00 per min charge for a 45 min surgery.

Good question, the Bariatric center where I go has 4 surgeons and only ONE is in my network. He will have another assistant with him because they need two.One surgeon cannot do this surgery alone. I suppose if I get a bill for this I will fight it with my insurance company. ..

Let us know the outcome of this I would really like to know...

Most surgeons who use an assistant, typically will bill the ins co. hoping they pay. If they don't pay, then most surgeons write it off. I would speak to a supervisor or the original surgeon's billing dept.

Like Patty above, my surgeon has 3 other surgeons in the group and yes, they always need a surgical assistant. I would start with your surgeon's office first by saying you were never told of an assist nor a charge.Good luck.

Did you call there billing department or your surgeons office? I had the same thing happen and I called my surgeons office right away. Since they chose the assistant, she was willing to just accept what the insurane was willing to pay.

Yes, I would call the physician who did your surgery and speak with "him personally". Stand your gound or you will be paying the bill, good luck! :D

I got a surprise bill in the mail for almost $5 thousand after I was told I only had my co-pay. Come to find out my referral didn't get placed in the right hands. So *knock on wood* I haven't gotten another bill from them.. Hope yours is an easy fix.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
