April 2006 Bandits

Recommended Posts

So I got back from Monterrey today. Everything is going well. After the surgery my upper back and shoulders hurt so bad I couldn't lay on them. But I walked up and down the hospital halls (even though it was the very last thing I wanted to do) and throughout the night the pain began to subside. The next day Rumbaut tells me he found a moderate hernia and repaired that while he was in there. So I got 2 for the price of 1. =)

Today (3 days post op) I am able to sleep on either side. I'm surprised that my main problem is in my chest. When I do a lot of walking or housework or wahtever I get short of breath easily and it hurts. I have a hard time taking deep breaths and coughing or sneezing is a bitch. So for my pre-op April bandit friends -- there is nothing to fear. If I can do it, anybody can.

For anybody using Rumbaut, make sure you are proactive with the appts. and car rides. For example, I didn't know after pre -op tests that I had a meeting with rumbaut that night until his office called at 5:30 and said I was supposed to be there at 5. When i was leaving the hotel they handed me a fax that said that. So ask for fax when you get in.

Also, on my way to the airport the hotel called my room and said the taxi to the airport was there. So I went down and took it. When we got to the airport the driver wanted me to pay for the ride (when it is supposed to be included by docs office). Turns out he is not part of the Rumbaut service. I still don't know why the hotel called my room telling me "my taxi" was there. I never ordered one and that wasn't the right one. So make sure you use the "suburban" company.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask. Good Luck to the pre-op April bandits! And to the post-op April bandits ...you are in my thoughts with every Protein Drink. By the way, would it be really bad to lick a cadbury egg I have left in my fridge from easter??? Should've pitched it before I left I guess.

Welcome Back Indababy. Glad they could repair your hernia during surgery - wonder if that has any affect on if you do better with the band or have less gas etc ?

I would leave the cadbury egg as a treat when you can eat solids, hmmm or is the center not a solid ?? lol

I have seen this and posted it in other sections. Don't deprive yourself of things you want, just eat moderate portions of what you want (or so I have seen from some very successful bandsters here) if You feel like you are dieting, then you are apt to cheat.

Can't wait to see how well this works - reverse psychology always worked well with my kids lol

happy healing

Welcome back Indy and congratulations on your banding! I had mine on 04/11/2006 with Dr. Rumbaut as well. I had some similar issues with appointments but the taxi cab thing was perfect for me. I never paid, just tipped b/c I didn't really spend any money while I was there. ;)

How are you feeling and have you weighed yourself? I couldn't wait to weigh in.

So my surgery is the day after tomorrow, but I know I wont be able to post before then. I'm feeling so ready it's amazing, I guess the long process of getting everything in order helps get us as ready as possible. Good luck to the rest of you who are within the next couple of days, weeks, months, etc.

Just a little update from me here in New Zealand, wow, today was my 1 week band anniversary.........I have been a little sore but now noticing more movement in my tummy, I haven't been able to think about holding it in at all, but now I can a bit, yipeee!!!! I have to be honest, I had two really bad turns this week, one required a doctor to come to the house because I couldn't stop violently vomiting........it seems I may have had to much to drink (whoops I mean my liquids, not the old bottle hehehe). wow, what a learning experience, I now find out I am already inflated, is everyone else, so the surgeon thought I might need a deflate (ALREADY???) but I have coped better the last day or two, I never want to experience that again, I thought I was dying.........so did my mum!!!:omg: :cry

I have been to the shops a couple of times, but can't last more than 2 hours..........

Where are all those recipes for liquids for me, hehehe!!! No-one has replied, does anyone know some good Soups with chicken or fish etc..........relatively clear ones,

Love and hugs to you all, Ceperano and Alison should be checking back in with us soon

Amourette!!!!:clap2:

PS have my one week check up on Thursday!!!

Amourette, glad youre feeling better. wow youre already in need of a deflate? how can that be if you are only one week out - maybe your band is smaller ?

Im not banded yet, so I have NO clue but that's what Ive read in other posts.

I think TheBestMe has a great egg drop Soup recipe - look that up in the search button - I have also seen a ton of people say that is a great recipe and has gotten through the first after stages of surgery. Or you could find her name and send her a p.m. and ask her if you don't find the link in searching.

Well, I'm on Day 4 and doing pretty good, think. The big hunger pangs went away by the end of day 2 (thank god). Had my first shower yesterday and it felt good. I'm surprised (knock on wood) at how well the incisions look. I just have 2 icky spots that blistered up from the tape that are now open and nasty looking (not on or near the incisions though), so I'll just keep an eye on those. Thankfully I can carefully roll onto either side now to sleep...that helps a lot since I am a terrible back sleeper. My neck pain has also gone away, so I'm happy for that. As for the gas, I really don't think I'm getting any gas pains...at least nothing that I notice. After I "eat" (ie. slowly drink 1/4 cup of consomme) I feel a little bit "golf ballish" (if that is what that is)...like a "I'm so full" feeling which I guess just means that my stomach is still swollen in there (since I'm not filled yet). I had difficutly taking my pills by crushing them (ewwww...taste horrible!) so I've been just cutting them up into tinier pieces and swallowing them; seems alright. I think I've been drinking enough liquids...sip sip sipping away. Although I think I'm only getting about 300-400 calories a day right now. I am getting 40 g of Protein a day.

The only prob (other than dealing with the physchological issues of wanting to eat some chip and dip!!!) is that I'm VERY VERY VERY irritable. (lol maybe because I don't allow the chip & dip?). I find that I'm on the edge a lot of the time (for the last 2 days) and despite my husband being the sweetest person who couldn't do more for me if he tried, I find myself either biting at him or wanting to bite at him FOR NO REASON. *sigh*....I hope this passes because it is so not fair to him. Yes, we are open and communicate about it but it still makes me feel sooooo bad.

So, that's my update. Hope everyone else is doing well whether they too have just been banded or about to!!!!

May the Band be with You!!

Good to hear you're doing better Yoda. yeeouch on the 2 spots from the tape - not sure if those of you having problems have gotten the tape off.

PLEASE ask your doctor about doing this first in case they have any rules against it.

A tip I learned from 2 previous surgeries and tons of blood work is this:

take a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol and go along the edges of your tape and gently dab over it, keep applying small amounts and it helps the sticky stuff come off.

Tks Lisa...I"ll try that trick with the steri strips once it is time for the to come off (if they haven't already fallen off on their own).

Hi everybody, I just got in from the hospital. Everything went well except for the Morphine, which made me extremely nauseated by 6pm. So I ended up not taking anything for pain until early this afternoon. I didn't develop the gas pain yet, but imagine it will rear it's ugly head some time soon. I hope someone has heard from Eva. Is she doing well? Welcome home to all the other Bandits. Talk to you later this week. Wow, I do have that pregnant belly look.

Ok, for those not banded yet and are interested in a lap band actual surgery video, watch this. I won't lie, they answered about 20 questions I had, such as abdominal workouts post surgery, slippage, etc. This video was live.

Here is my thread link. I just had the band placed a few weeks ago and I can't stress enough how important it is to follow the rules in order to not only preserve your band's position but to also lose your weight.

I'm 35 and just got my banded on 4-20-06. How are you doing since you got the band? Were you banded in the US? I was kind of curious what food plan they have you on and how you're coping?? I cannot stop thinking about what I CAN'T have. I am hungry all the time and I really miss greasy, fattening, bad-for-you-but-oh-so-good foods!! I am sooooooo tired of the liquid phase already.

I've had really bad mid-back pain, also. I'm large chested and THAT doesn't help! Just wanted to know if you're experiencing the same things?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
