Need A Protein Kick-Start! What Is Your Fav Brand Shake...water???

Recommended Posts

After a 9 month depressive period (seperate from any Band issues), I am in need of getting a lot of Protein into my system. I am focusing on lean meats...fish and chicken...but need a protein shake/water suppliment to get things going. While watching calories, I want to be sipping protein 24/7!

The only problem I seem tohave with have with Protein shakes is that whey protein seems to cause a weird, sweet after-taste in my throat and mouth an hour or so after I drink it. I used soy protein during my soft-food period after surgery and that seems to help. But I am looking for any suggestions.

I have seen that Ensure has a Protein shake now. Any good? How about the Water additives?

Thanks!!! Trying to get back on the losing-weight Band wagon!

I use the Syntrax Nectar Natural line.. The peach is my favorite. They're made with Stevia so there are no artificial sweeteners in them. It's whey Protein isolate, but I don't get any aftertaste with them. 23g protein, 90 cal, 0 carbs per scoop. I buy them online at supplementwarehouse.com.

The strawberry mousse from the regular line (sweetened with Splenda) is amazing too.

Hope that helps!

I'm not sure what my pre-op shake is sweetened with but I love GNC's brand Lean Shake Swiss Choc. It was the only one I could tolerate and still drink it for Breakfast 12 days post op now. Good luck.

I make a smoothie for Breakfast with whey Protein, 1/2 cup non-fat milk, tsp of peanutbutter, flax meal for Fiber, 1/2 an apple, and frozen fruit to make it shake like (or add ice cubes). I thought it would be a pain to do, but I really look forward to it now. I'll add pretty much with whatever fruit I have on hand and it is very filling and yummy. I am not a breakfast eater, but this is how I combat that. It works well for me.

My favorites are the Premier brand from costco. chocolate & vanilla. 30 g Protein, 160 calories, 3G fat, 3G carbs, 1g sugar. Yummy & filling. I still have a couple a day bc I don't like meat. Good luck!

My wife and I love Herbalife shakes. The Formula1 shakes that you mix with milk come in an allergen-free version (no soy, dairy, or gluten.) There's instant version that you mix with Water.

But the Protein Drink Mix that you mix with Water sounds more like what you're looking for. None of these use whey. PDM is actually my wife's favourite overall, since it has more of a thick, rich consistency.

...okay, time for my snack. :P

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
