Ok so when I first learned that I couldn't drink before during or after eating I thought eh no big deal.....not! It's pretty hard to remember. I find that ill eat and its just habit to get something to drink....anyone have any tips/tricks for not doing this? I just do it w out thinking and then after that first SIP I remember but u know too late by then......

I'm one of the few who find this topic to be moot. I sip a little with my meals and sometimes I'll drink right after a meal. It's not like I'm drinking and then discover that, hey, I'm still hungry and start eating all over. I think the point is that if you drink, it empties your pouch quicker and can waylay that satisfaction trigger we all seek so desperately.

That doesn't work on me. When I'm eating, I know when I'm full and I stop. Drinking a few minutes later has no effect on my satiety.

BTW-I sip here and there because some days my band is so tight I can't eat many foods without getting stuck, so I follow my food with a sip. I still eat much less and it's the only way I can get the nutrition I need.

Cazzy pointed out on an earlier thread this: "the trick is with this band, is to become your own expert". I totally agree. Once you get to the point that you have this relationship with your band, then you know what works and what doesn't. Hope this helps

Yes, we have had a rather heated discussion on this topic before, and there are differing instructions given by different surgeons to their patients. My surgeon has advised not to drink while eating, and not for a full hour after finishing my meal.

I have not found this practice to be a hardship for me, especially if I hydrate myself properly prior to taking my first bite. If you keep your mind aware about eating, as I have also been advised to do (aware to take small bites, chew every bite well, etc) it became an adjustment that was not difficult for me to incorporate into habit. "Mindful eating", as mentioned above, also helps to avoid many, not all, of the stuck episodes that many forum participants have posted about.

I find that my level of stress may occasionally create a sense of temporary increased restriction with my band...so I make an effort to identify what the stress factor is, and take measures to de-stress and relax my mind prior to eating.

IMHO, I do feel that it is important to thoroughly discuss this issue with your surgeon. I would not recommend going against their medical advice without the knowledge and approval of your physician.

Other's mileage on this topic does vary...it's an informed choice you have to make for yourself.

I really don't have an issue with this. I drink a large glass of Water right before eating. The less salty your food choices the easier it is to not drink while eating.

My surgeon is not against me having a little bit of liquid with my meal. What I found is that as I got to a tighter level of restriction is that if I take a drink of something while eating it will cause me to get stuck.

Early on it made no difference in how soon i would get hungry again. But not...it upsets the delicate balance of what is going on between my pouch, band, and lower stomach. it just isn't worth the risk of getting stuck.

My nutritionist is completely against drinking while eating.

I occasionally do. But I have found that I sometimes do get stuck as a result. My strategy for handling this is to order a glass of Water at restaurant and drink until food comes. After that no more or puking will follow.

This makes sense to me I don't use salt and while I'm aware that some.foods already have it in there I don't think I have to much .....additionally I know that I am well hydrated so that can't be the issue either.....I am mindful of my drinking as I stated earlier.I catch my self.doing it and stop. It's not something that I wish to make a habit out of....and I don't find myself too.hungry between meals and I never snack so....j think I'm going to take ur advice and be my own expert for what works for me.....think I was mostly looking for.some tips to help me avoid grabbing for the Water out of habit.
