For How Long Should My Mom Stay After Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I live by myself with my 2 dogs and my Mom is coming to stay with me after the surgery. How long do you all think I will need her to stay with me? She is scheduled to be with me the night before and after surgery. Do you think I will need her to stay much longer? I'm mostly concerned about not being able to get out of bed or stand up on my own. I'm also concerned about having to bend down while placing my dogs' food bowls on the floor. Thanks!

My mom did the same thing. I think 3 days is good.

I spent one or two nights with my sister. I had surgery on a Wednesday & boarded my dogs since I don't have a fenced yard & didn't know how I would feel. I felt pretty good but did a lot of sleeping the first few days. It was nice not to have any responsibilities. All the best!

Yea 3 days sounds good if you like your mum being there also if u need to bend, then use your knees not your back and tummy :)

Thanks for the info. I have a chihuahua and a boxer (they are the best of friends). I've got a doggy door for them so I don't have to worry about letting them out or walking them. Even though the chi doesn't bother using it except to bark at the neighbors  ) She'll go potty outside if she "happens" to be outside when the mood strikes her.

I have 2 cats and a dog. I had to board my dog for a few days because I couldn't have walked her (she's over 50lbs and only 8 months old -- very rambunctious!) The cats were fine. I stayed 1 night in the hospital and then alone after that. Getting out of bed hurt, but it wasn't too bad. It felt like I did a million sit ups.

Each person's recovery is different. I know some people on here who took 2 weeks off from work and others who went back the next day.

For myself, I stayed in the hospital overnight, had the weekend to rest and went back to work on the Monday. By the end of the week, I had even taken a group of students on a field trip. My husband was home with me over the weekend. So I think three days will be fine for your mother to stay. Try to move around as much as you can tolerate. It will make the recovery much easier on you. Good luck :)

I have seven inside dogs and a husband, but my mom flew up and stayed five days after my surgery. Thank goodness because the pain was so bad and my husband had no idea what to do. I don't know how anybody goes back to work the same week they get the band... I couldn't button my pants cuz I was so swollen, I couldn't put a seatbelt on because it was so irritating. I would recommend she stay as long as she can!

My brother in law drove 6 hrs to take me to and from the hospital. I also spent one night, then the next in a motel (I live 3 hrs away and my brother in law was hesitant about taking me that far away from my dr so soon). He stayed a total of a week. I was fine to do it myself after about a day tho. But it was nice to visit with him! I also have 1 dog and had 2 cats. No problems bending over

Good luck!

My mom brought me home from the hospital and stayed with me a few hours (took my dogs out when we first got back) after that I was alone with my 2 dogs, American Eskimo and Pomeranian. She came by a few hours the next day but other than that I had no problem fending for myself. But then again I've always been a very independent person.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
