Past Success...then Failure With Phentermine?

Recommended Posts

Hello All -

Just wondering if anyone who now has the band has a history with phentermine. I had great success for about a year and almost got down to my goal weight (put pictures on my profile for proof). Eventually, it stopped working for me even after waiting as much as a year to try again.

Does anyone else have this experience? How is the band different for you in controlling your appetite. I knew that the band would be a good choice because I needed hunger control mostly and when phentermine worked - I did my part too!

Thanks!

Comparing the band to Phentermine is like comparing apples to oranges. Totally different.

Phentermine is essentially legal speed. Over time your body becomes immune to it's effects and it takes more and more to work. Once you stop taking it, most people gain all their weight back and then some. Not to mention it's not good for your heart at all.

The band is a tool. It does suppress the appetite and restrict how much you can eat, however you still have change your eating habits to healthy ones for a lifetime.

I tried phentermine many many years ago and i loved it for what it was, i can remember decorating nearly the whole house in 2 days lol of course i was a lot younger then, but to be honest once u stop taking it your metabolism goes into shutdown and u only have to look at food and u will gain weight. if u struggle just to lose 12 lbs then i can see a use for it but over the long term or with large amounts of weight to lose, steer clear and use the band, u are teaching yourself a new approach to eating , phentermine doesnt do this :)

I did change my eating habits for the better with phentermine though. For me all I need for motivation to do the right thing is for my body to work with me when I am working hard. I got this with phentermine and so far I am getting it with the band. I made better choices because I wasn't so pre-occupied with food.

Even if it is "legal speed" it helped me stay on track. After radioactive iodine in 2004 I have not functioning thyroid so phentermine brought my heart rate from 60 to 80.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
