When To Introduce Fruits?

Recommended Posts

Hi group,

I was talking to the nutrionist about 3 weeks post op and she mentioned not yet being able to eat fruits aside from pureed and over ripe fruits. But what I really want to know is when did most of you start eating strawberries, kiwi, apples and pears.

The nutritionist was opposed to strawberries and kiwi and other fruit with seeds because of the seeds regardless of whether or not I pureed them and threw them in a shake or something.

As far as apples and pears, I'm guessing I'm going to have to peel them for the rest of my life? Does anyone eat them with the skins still?

And, I also heard that oranges and other membrane fruits are not good...for life. Does that mean that no one on this forum eats these fruits?

I guess I really need a "fruit" lesson. I'm going to discuss again with the nutritionist next week and see what may have changed and what I can now eat since it will then be 5 1/2 weeks post op. But I just wanted some feedback from all of you first.

Thanks in advance.

I began having fruit while on the pureed diet, cantaloupe and strawberries were my favorites. I limit fruit to once a day; somehow it is difficult for me to break a lifelong habit of having fruit and no veggies at breakfast! I was never advised by the dietitian to avoid strawberries, and in fact they were listed on my approved list of fruits allowed during Week 3 post op in my manual, provided by my surgeon.

When I returned to solid foods, I have continued to eat melon, strawberries, and blueberries. I find that the Fiber in apples is a bit harsh for me, and I have eaten some of the skin, but chewing it for so long begins to make my jaw hurt. So, I really avoid apples when I can. Pears are easier to ingest, and I still eat them, but not always the skin.

As for oranges and grapefruit, I was never told to avoid them, but was cautioned that they are like a slider food, as is apple sauce. You can eat much more, and have very little in substance and nutrition, higher on carbs, and therefore get hungry faster after eating. The dietitian advised that drinking fruit juice was like drinking sugar Water, so I continue to limit fruits, and try to eat mostly veggies. I still like to have some cold red grapefruit sections as a treat on a hot day...

I hope that this information helps...best wishes as you continue on your journey!

I eat any and all fruits. However, I've doin some fruits go down easier than others. I have to make sure they are very well chewed before swallowing though. pineapple I have to literally nibble on. If I try to eat a regular bite and chew well it still doesn't want to go down.

I don't know anyone that got fat from eating too much fruit. So I have it when I want it, I just measure it out. Usually not more than 1/4cup. I am about 7 weeks out and eat kiwis, bananas, mangos, and berries. Haven't tried anything with skin yet.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
