Are You On The South Beach Diet?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My surgeon puts you on the South Beach diet. I was banded five years ago and was unfilled a year later, I gained back what I lost and then some. I have an appointment with him in a week to see if I can re-start the Band process.

I had alot of problems adapting to the SoB diet. I found it difficult to shop for as I have very, very little cash to buy large quantities of an item I'll use once or twice before it goes bad. Or, I was just seriously dumbfounded by the do's and don't's of the restrictions. Half of the time I will be cooking for myself, the other half for me and my husband. Cooking for two (kind of like, one because I'll be eating so little) is hard for me. I don't like to cook, my husband always does that. Though I know I will have to learn how to cook real soon!

Have any of you had to follow the SoB diet? If so, HOW did you do it? I know of the web site and the books, but would like to hear from a person actively on the diet.

I need to make this work!!!

I've been on South Beach before and to a certain extent I'm on it now. There are 3 stages and unless you want to lose weight rapidly phase 2 and 3 are fine for the band. But phase 1 is similar to Atkins with some olive oil thrown in. I'm doing that one now but it's only for one week and I'm doing it to break up a plateau I've been on for about 10 days. It's good to keep your body guessing and not get comfortable with the same diet every day.

I eat more red meat than Agatson recommends but I try to keep the hamburger around 4% fat. I can't eat steak much anymore as it gets stuck easily. Another version of Atkins, South Beach is the Paleo Diet. But with the Paleo diet you're allowed to eat fresh fruit. No dairy, no sugars, no flour/grain products/pasta and no processed foods like bologna, hotdogs, etc.

Write back if you have questions? I've got the books and cookbook right here.

I started out on it but I couldn't afford to eat that way. So now I just cut out carbs, its simple, its cheap. One day a week I allow myself carbs, within reason. This is what my nutritionist, recommended. Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
