Uh-Oh, Surgery In 4 Days And Kids Are Getting Sick...

Recommended Posts

Child #1 is getting over the 24 hour stomach flu, #2 got hit with it tonight, and #3 is running a fever and appears to have a head cold.

Meanwhile, I'm downing Vitamin C like it's about to go off the market, but just started sneezing and have a neck and head ache.

I'm being banded in 4 days (3 days now because it's after midnight) and I'm afraid my doctor will not perform the lap band surgery if I am sick or have an elevated white blood cell count. My son was scheduled for foot surgery and he had a slight cold w high WBC. It was this big deal that he actually got to go through with the surgery that day. We had to push for it.

If I have a cold I still want the surgery, but if it's a stomach flu I'm thinking that would be a bad idea. Or would it be okay? Any experience with this, anyone? If doctor does not have an issue with it, I'll do it.

Has anyone been rejected on the day of surgery because of an illness?

My kids were diagnosed with hand, foot, mouth 2 days before my lapband, and I still went through with surgery. I think they do ask you if you have symptoms of a flu or cold, but I didn't have any symptoms. And, they didn't take any blood or test me that morning. No complications, and I'm on day 3 post op. I just hope you have lots of support for sick kids and you....who will need support in doing many things! :)

I had a nephrectomy 2 years ago. I was actually pregnant and it was a really high risk surgery. Two days before surgery i developed strep throat. They put me on antibiotics immediately. The day of surgery the anesthesiologist did not want to tube me. My urologist and vascular surgeon fought it over with him and in the end he agreed to go forward. I think it depends on the surgeons, anesthesiologists, illness and type of surgery. Best of luck to you!
