Surgery Tomorrow-Terrifed, Nervous....

Recommended Posts

I can't believe surgery day is here tomorrow. I just have this pit in my stomach that I can't get rid of. I keep looking at my list of pros and cons about the band:

Pros:

  1. Feel better about self
  2. Take off weight
  3. Minimally invasive
  4. Reversible
  5. Ok for pregnancy
  6. Live healthier lifestyle

Cons:

  1. Worried-slippage, erosion
  2. Surgery
  3. Regurgitate food
  4. Gain weight back

But, I just don't know if this is the right decision. Is that wrong so soon to surgery time tomorrow. I have so many doubts and have come this far. I didn't cheat once on my 2 week liquid diet. I don't know if I'm strong enough for this change. I just don't know. Pray for me.

Everyone has doubts before surgery, no matter what u are having done, be more concerned about the health issues of not having it done, be scared of the obesity complications u will face if u dont lose wieght ...

Lapband surgery is the least invasive surgery and is a minor operation .. i am sure u will be fine and it sounds like u have the determination to make this band work for you so good luck and let us know how u get on and look forward to the rest of your life being healthy :)

To not cheat on a 2 week liquid diet shows extraordinary strength and commitment. I think that you are stronger then you think. Best of luck to you!

I was banded about 6 months ago. BEST. DECISION. EVER. Last December i weighed 225 lbs. , was unhappy in my own skin, tired all the time, wearing a size 18/1x , yada yada yada..................you know what im talking about . Today i weigh 182 and am still losin about a lb or so a week.. My energy is way up, i love the healthier and happier me, and im wearing a size 14 skinny jean ! (Me !!!) The extremely minor problems have been my own fault, , like eating too fast or too big a bite. No big deal . The positives are far outweighing the smaller negitives , which in my case are i cant eat raw broccoli or dry chicken. Um, oh darn................ My surgery was so easy, i went Christmas shopping 3 days after surgery. Other than feeling like i had a bad pulled muscle on my left side, i had no pain. I could go on and on about the positives but you get the message. The only thing you'll regret is not getting banded sooner. JUST DO IT !!!

It's on there twice. Maybe you should look at your settings and you have signatures on ignore?

I felt the same way right up to the time I was on the table. Then for the first two weeks I started to doubt if I made the right decision...here I am 2 months post op and I feel this has been the best decision I have made. It is an adjustment. You have to re-think food and think about your eating triggers. Actually taking time to eat and listen to your body telling you that you are satisfied and not full is a huge learning curve. All the while worrying about getting in enough calories. I have found I don't worry about getting in enough....I concentrate on how my tummy feels and if I have head hunger or tummy hunger. For me the most important thing for the first few weeks was making sure I stayed well hydrated. I didn't feel like eating anyway till about week 4. I can't emphasize chew chew chew and then chew some more before swallowing...then wait in between bites and really listen to your body. Eating out was also a struggle at first since you will eat differently than others. I am to the point of not caring and just taking my time, eat slowly and enjoy each mouthful...and bring home leftovers. Keep posting on the forum as to how you are doing and if you have any concerns. Also make sure you have good communication with your doctor and staff. There are no stupid questions. Take care and I wish you much success.

Hi-

I would like to ask if anyone did not lose a large amount of weight during the 14 presurgery liquid diet. I onky have 4 more days before my surgery and only down 4 pounds after 11 days on the liquid phase.

I am concerned that my liver won't be smaller in size in order for my doctor to install the band. I spoke with his nurse about only taking 4 pounds off and she told me that typically people lose on average 10-15 pounds on the presurgery diet.

Should I be concerned or is this a sign that I will have trouble losing weight after having the band due to being older (53yrs) and slow metabolism?

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
