Birth Control Pills Ok To Swallow?

Recommended Posts

I have my surgery at 730 tomorrow morning and I can't believe I forgot to ask if my birth control pills are ok to take after the band!!! I know most things they want chewable, but dies anyone know if tiny birth control pills are ok? Especially the day of surgery? I'll ask in the morning when I'm there, but I'd like to ease my racing mind tonight as I lay in bed lol!

One more thing...they dont want you to take any medicine before surgery. Also they give you a anti clotting medicine that makes your birth control not work for a month. They gave it to me after I already had some mess to make me groggy but luckily my hubby remembered. You might want to ask if any of the stuff you get will interfere with your birth control so you don't have a suprise one month lap band baby:)

Should not be a problem.

I know your surg is tomorrow morning (good luck!) but could your doc maybe switch you to the ring or the patch? Some non-oral form of bc until you can swallow pills? sleep well in the meantime, and good luck in the morning!

Whoops, just saw the responses referencing the anti clotting med. Good to know! (my husband just made this face  when I read out loud it renders bc ineffective for a month, lol)

Maybe it's just me and the fact that I use and IUD (sorry TMI) but you would think doctors and their support staff would think to tell people about these things!!! I mean jeez, they don't want people getting pregnant for a year or so afterwards so you would think this should be at the top of their list of things to discuss with potential patients!

My docs made sure that I was on bc before they'd even talk to me (I'm using the ring, and I echo the "sorry for the TMI" sentiments above). I have a friend who had the sleeve done recently though, and she had to be off of her bc for a month before they'd have her in surgery at all. So, I'm curious to see what my doc says about any forms of hormonal bc.

You can't have anything the morning of surgery. You'll probably be able to take them afterwards bucause they are usually very small. I take my allergy pills and tylenol without a problem. I would not take Advil, Motrin or Ibuprophen because those are prohibited after the lap band. "according to my surgeon"

Ps: Every surgeon has different rules and views on the subject.

I was on the pill pre-surgery, but about a week out I was reading on here about bc and someone mentioned something about it not being as effective afterwards. I called my gynecologist and she said the best bc for people who have had WLS would be an IUD or the Nuva Ring just because in some people the hormones do not absorb properly anymore.

Yikes! They really should go over how it's not as effective! I heard that once but not from them, must have been on a website. I'll have to look into switching to something else after ASAP! Thanks for the replies!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
