I began to prepare for this change several months prior to my surgery, so my post op adjustment was not difficult.

As with coping with my hunger, I use distraction to get my mind off of not being able to drink for the hour following a meal. I get involved with a project around the house, answer my email messages, read my current book, the possibilities are just about endless.

I also make it a point to properly hydrate myself prior to meals, which I find does make a difference after the meal as to the length of time that elapses before I feel thirsty again.

I usually have between 80-90 oz of Water a day...so I do miss being able to take a sip whenever I want. With practice and proper hydration prior to your meal, it does get easier with practice!

For those of you who already practice this, what do you do if you go out to eat? Have them remove the glass from the table?

I actually have them bring me a Water when we sit down so I can sip before food comes. I've found the waitresses also harass you less if you have something to drink. I've tried no drink and they constantly come by to see if I've changed my mind. It's really annoying.

How do you prevent yourself from accidently taking a drink without thinking about it?

It's a habit for me by now so I don't even think about drinking And eating, but a suggestion at a restaurant is to ask for Water with lots of lemon wedges. Put the wedges on the rim of the glass so that you can't help but have them in the way to remind you not to drink.

Personally I don't think a few sips the whole meal will affect you at all. I have a pill i take with a teeny sip of Water afterward and I don't feel this has affected me at all.

I started practicing not drinking with meals a couple Weeks pre-surgery, so now I don't have any desire to drink and eat together.

If you need to, push the glass far enough away that you have to mindfully retrieve it when you want to drink.

As for the statement "I get thirsty when I eat," I used to as well. It has taken practice and I believe a dietary change- I usually eat moist foods, not the crap I used to eat that dries out your mouth.

For me, personally, I avoid spicy foods now. Salty foods. A salad with chicken shouldn't make you thirsty.

If I'm at a restaurant and get a glass of Water, I always take the table salt and pepper and pour some into my water. I'm not sure if people have ever noticed me doing this or not..I'm sure if they have, they think I'm nuts...lol. That is the only way I can keep from having a drink at the table.

I find a healthier food choices I make the less salty they are and the less I need a drink. I have a large glass of Water before I start to eat whether at home or out. Let the waitress bring a water and leave it there.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
