I just read last night......

.....and I am not surprised, but it is good to see this information our there.

...if you are obese at 40, (I am 42) you can reduce your life by 7 years. Good reason to work hard on getting weight down don't you think?

Tonight I am going to a doctor's speech on childhood obesity and how important good natural whole foods are for our children.

I have 3 kids, all of whom are thin, but I see one is a carb addict, just like me, and one of them eats portions that if they continue - will produce an overweight teen. I am trying everything in my power to keep my kids eating healthfully and getting lots of exercise. But sometimes, it is hard to keep 'junk' food out of the house.

I'm looking forward to this.

Sometimes it doesn't matter what you keep out of the house. There was a bit on TV the other day about a high school that took out all the junk food machines. The next day, a couple of entrerprising students started SELLING junk food at school...and one of them reported making (probably her gross sales) $50 the first day.

Enterprising young woman indeed.

I admit, the schools are really getting the gears around here. There is a whole movement to get junk food out of the cafeterias. Doesn't seem to be a very popular ideas.

But so far for my kids, so good. We live in Canada, and unless a school is in an impoverished area, there is no hot lunch program, we brown bag it. There are no junk vending machines. Thank goodness.

BUT my eldest is coming up to high school where there is a cafeteria, and vending machines. I just hope to educate her so she will make wiser choices. Junk is OK every once in a while, but I'd hate to see my kids eating it daily.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
