So How Honest Were You....

Recommended Posts

My friends & coworkers know I had the scope so my plan is to tell them I'm having surgery to fix my hiatic hernia that was discovered during my scope so it would explain my food changes in the beginning weeks

During my surgery they repaired my hernia so that is exactly what I am telling people...and technically it's not a lie ;)

I haven't told my family except for my sister...and I have told about 7-10 friends. I don't want the world to know so they can start policing me and asking 2,000 questions and/or judging me. I used to think weight loss surgery was an easy out before I hit 350 and started this process. Most people won't understand just like I didn't. There is nothing easy about this and I just couldn't take any added pressure.

At work they didn't have a clue and by law the cant ask why I took sick leave. I had one nosey supervisor ask me point blank and I just said hernia repair.

my husband of course was my pillar of strength through this whole ordeal. i had to tell my boss to get the time off, i was off for Christmas holiday week of 2008 and nobody was the wiser. after i lost about 50 pounds, everybody started to ask questions and of course there was the jealous few that would not ask about what was going on. my boss who loves to gossip, called me in her office to get my permission to answer the questions of the curious jealous women and i said at that point, go ahead. i was so good the first two years but this last year has me cheating more than usual. I have gained 8 pounds and am trying to swim it off. i do not regret not telling anyone in the beginning. The pressure i believe would be too much for any yo yo dieter like myself. you need to focus on you and your journey and the pressure of jealous wandering eyes would sabotage anybody trying to change their lifestyle. i guess it is a personal choice but this is what worked for me.

I told everyone. I used it as motivation and commitment.

I've told the perfect amount of people with the exception of one person that found out by horrible mistake.

My parents know, as well as my aunts, my boyfriend, 2 best friends, a good friend and someone that walked up on me while I was taking the call that my surgery was approved. I couldn't imagine telling anyone else. Maybe when I lose the weight I want to I'll fill more people in but for now its no ones business.

I notice a lot of people that said they told everyone have loss a lot of weight. Did you tell everyone BEFORE you started being successful or even before your actual surgery date? I think I would shout it from the tallest building if I have lost a large amount of weight I would be so proud but in the begin it's too much outside pressure So did you tell everyone immediately

My friends, family and co-workers knew I was considering it. Once I went for my evaluation and got a surgery date, I told everybody who would listen!! The support I got was tremendous. I had very few people who were negative about it. But then, anybody who knows me knows they might as well save their breath if they disagree with me! I'm not going to listen to them anyway!

I told everyone at work. We're in the medical field, and a very close knit work family. Everyone was so supportive and happy for me!

I've thought about this a lot and I don't think I'm going to say anything. I really just don't feel the need to share it. I'll tell my parents, sister and my husband, but that's it.

My hubby was the only one. My dad knows now because I asked him for a father's blessing before I had surgery. I figure I'll tell my sisters eventually and don't plan to lie but I'm not shouting it either ;) just will wait for people to ask and when they do I'll be honest. I'm kind of nervous for peeps to find out, I don't know why.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
