Do I Really Need A Fill?

Recommended Posts

Was banded on May 23, 2012. My surgeon says he gives everyone their first fill at 4 weeks. I've been on regular food for almost 2 weeks and I'm still losing weight (2-4lb per week). My question is if I'm losing more weight than is recommended per week do I really need this fill?

I would think no! I would wait a month and go from there. If things are going so well i would definitely wait. Sounds like things are going great!

Keep the appointment, but they might look at your weight loss and say.. nope no fill needed. This way it is showing you are following up with their instructions and they can monitor what is going on as far as the weight loss. If you just call in and try to cancel they might think that you are not following and possibly gained. I have gone in for a fill appt and they did not fill me... Congrats!!

I also would keep the appointment and decide together. They may do a very small fill. You likley wouldnt notice a difference with the first fill anyway.

Keep the appointment and let the surgeon help you decide. I would say if you are staying full for 4+ hours and not white knuckle dieting, you are probably okay with no fill. If you are hungry but are pushing through, then probably a fill would be good.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
