Selected through the Weight Management program through AHS in Calgary and my surgery date is June 27th!!! So excited and a tiny bit nervous. Having my 'last supper' this evening and start the two week pre-op diet tomorrow. Guess I'll lose a few more pounds before the 27th.......lol.

Any words of advice or inspirational words to make it through the next two weeks would be great.

Congrats! I tried for years through AHS / former CHR and was never chosen. I've decided to take matters into my own hands but I know how hard it is to get approved so I am super happy for you. Also, we have the same band date! I'm due June 27 but having the procedure in Ontario. :) Band Buddies?

Hi Christine,

I know I definitely got lucky! They had a change to funding, and then it changed and changed again but I managed to hang on :). Do you have to do a strict pre-op diet for two weeks? I'm a bit worried about that but short term pain for long term pain.......

I'm on a 3 week (high BMI) 3 shakes a day + green veggies diet. Its called SlimTime. So I've completed one week almost , 2 more weeks to go.

Dr.Mitchell is your surgeon?

Dr Mitchell is one of the three surgeons with the program - I met him at one of the classes. But my surgeon is Dr Debrui - really nice man. The third fellow is a Dr Church. All the surgeries are out of the PLC. They are doing some gastric sleeves too this go round for some of the patients. Dr Mitchell also operates through Surgical Weight Loss Centres in Vancouver privately. Not sure if the other two are affiliated with any private clinics elsewhere.

The presurgical diet we have to do is Ensure HP (4/day) and no fat/no carb veggies - like onions, broccoli, lettuce, etc. At least I can still have coffee......lol

Yes the SWLC here is connected to the one in Mississauga, ON. That's who I am going through with Dr.Cobourn. Dr.Mitchells office will be in charge of my follow-up and fills afterwards.

Our pre-ops are very similar. I am very glad we get coffee! I have a 7 month old baby and I need to be able to function!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
