Hi everyone :)

I'm a newbie. I had my band put in on the 30th March this year. I've lost 20lbs so far but I'm struggling. More mentally than physically but I feel completely lost! I'm only seventeen years old so not many of my friends have accepted my choice of operation and I've not had many people to talk too, especially around my age.

Does anyone else struggle mentally? How did you overcome it?

Please help

It is a struggle mentally and it will take time to change the way you see food and the way you live your life. As you get your fills and find you can eat less and less you need to find other things to do when you would have normally had a big meal. I find that when I get the munchies if I go and do something else that is not near the kitchen it helps me greatly. Get your mind on other things. Also, it doesn't hurt if you can get some counseling. I did before getting banded and I still get counseling and it does help. Good luck to you!

I feel like the mental journey is the hardest. I still struggle sometimes and I am 4+ years out. Be as mindful about your choices as you can. Anytime you feel the urge to cheat or go off program... pause... and ask yourself WHY you want to eat. Is it because you are hungry? Is it because it tastes good? Is it because you are bored?

The more you ask yourself the question, the more in tune you will get with your mind. Eventually the choices will become easier. You will pick up new healthier habits.

Stay positive.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
