Avoid Gaining Weight When With Mushies???

Recommended Posts

I have transitioned to mushies and will be starting soft foods soon. I have read lots of post about people gaining once they start eating mushies/soft foods. I am trying desperately to avoid this. Any tips from those that were able to avoid the gain?

I know this is time for healing, but I not ready to see my scale go up.

Thanks for your help.

Don't put butter and sour cream on your mashed spuds. Don't pour sugar all over your oatmeal. My nutritionist recommended I eat soft deli meats like turkey and i did which helped fill me. Tomato Soup just pours right through the band so I needed something semi solid. I make some mean refried Beans so that sticks around for a while, just don't be adding a bunch of lard to it.

Lots of mushies also have a high sodium content which can make you hold back Water which appears as weight gain. Try to keep that sodium content low.

Good luck.

lots of low calorie/low fat/low sugar mushy food will see u ok .. this time is for healing u 'might' put on weight but its not disaster if u do, be patient with your body and let it heal, then u can go to town on it by exercising it :)

Im going through that right now, just transitioned to soft foods today. I know it is easy to say dont concentrate on losing weight, but it is really true. I lost 10 pounds within the liquid phase, but I also was only able to consume about 500 calories a day. You cant really get excited about that because now that Im on mushies i know I have put that back on. I am eating things I never would as part of a regular diet of solid food. The Soup is full of sodium and things like potatoes and eggs i normally avoid. I am also overconsuming calories because this mushy crap does not fill me up and my band is pretty open so I don't have good restriction yet. It will get better on solid food. Before surgery I lost 40 pounds eating anywhere from 1000-1200 calories, but i was eating healthy hearty food. Since we cant do that right now, Im not focusing on losing for the entire 6 weeks of the healing phase. It has been hard, but 2 weeks left. I am also not exercising really yet and that makes a difference for me. So be patient and just try to eat good. Like my nurse said to me, you have the rest of the time to lose weight, there really is no rush. As long as you are following your doctors orders, it will come off eventually. Weight gain is not uncommon and we do know it can come off again.

Focus on Protein intake. Start, if you haven't already been, reading nutrition labels. I fell into a fast food trap during the mushy phase and didn't lose as much weight as I could have.

I recommend a Magic Bullet.....you can mash any cooked veggie or fruit in it and play with the consistently by adding Water, milk, butter, yogurt, stevia, broth or whatever......this way you get some produce In cooked or raw, and lay off the added salts and preservatives. find a cold Protein Powder that can go sweet or salty and add that in too! I like the Simply Complete non dairy Protein powder.< /p>

I noticed once I started the mushies I wasnt gaining but I did stop losing. By the time soft foods came around I had gained a good 3 lbs back. At that point I determined my recovery was over and started my two miles at the park a few days a week. So far I've been able to maintain my 20 lbs loss.

My diet is low carb/ low sugar/ low fat. It is 1000 calorie, 60 grams of Protein, 20 grams of carb, 20 grams of fat.

3 oz of lean Protein (turkey, chicken, fish). And 1 cup of vegetables.

The thing that helped me was to weigh and measure foods. Even with little or no restriction it will keep you on track.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
