Surgeon Or Nutritionist??

Recommended Posts

They both seem to tell SOME of us different things. Which do you follow?

The surgeon has the medical expertise and the nutritionist has the nutritional expertise. In my case, I see my surgeon and then he sends me to the nutritionist whose office is like about six steps from his patients rooms. I like the idea of keeping it separate otherwise it could confuse someone, especially a newly banded person like myself.

Just wondering others opinions about it.

Sharing is caring!! :D

Surgeons are technicians first and foremost. I'd see a nutritionist if you require dietary advice. Even my colorectal surgeon doesn't give me real advice on how to manage after bowel surgery but has sent me onto a dietician.

I've never had much joy out of dietitians, I really think you have to work out what's best for you yourself, but a little advice doesn't hurt.

Me either. Just tell me what my goals are...... calories, Protein etc., and I will figure out how to get there. It is hard to eat for both the band and diabetes. For me anyway.

The dietician is probably best for advice on foods to eat to maximise weight loss but the surgeon probably has more knowledge about foods that could be a problem with the band. I don't have a lot of respect for dieticians. Most of them seem to know no more about food and weight loss than the average person. They certainly don't tell you anything that you couldn't find in a 5 minute search on the internet. The other problem is that there are no exact answers when it comes to weight loss and the theories change all the time. 1 year fat is the enemy, the next it is sugar, then wheat then it is back to good old calorie counting.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
