april22ky 5 Posted June 9, 2012 Banded on May 18th. I was in the grocery store and felt something on my belly button, I looked down at my belly button and saw what I thought was a hair coming out of my incision area. When I got home I tried to pull the "hair" out but realized real quick that it was not a hair. My incision started bleeding and I realized it was wire coming out of my incision at my port site. My best guess is that this is the wire they use to attach the port to the abdominal wall? Should I be worried about this? Did the surgeon not cut the wire short enough? It's now Friday night and I can't exactly get ahold of the surgery center or my doctor's office. Anyone have any advice?
1shauna1 129 Posted June 9, 2012 Um yeah, I would think you should be worried! Go to the ER, if you can't go directly to your surgeon's office Monday morning. Wire things shouldn't be sticking out of you!
april22ky 5 Posted June 9, 2012 It's similar to fishing line.
RobinGirl 34 Posted June 9, 2012 It could be a spitting stitch. Sometimes the self dissolving stitches will push their way out. I had a ton of them for months after my breast reduction.
Humming Bird 275 Posted June 9, 2012 It may just be a suture from the inside of the incision site that was supposed to disolve. I don't know, I guess it could also be what they use to anchor the port to the muscle and they left a long tail on it or something. If it were me, I would definitely contact my surgeon about it, but it would be a real drag if it's like that all weekend. I would not go to the ER for something that is not an emergency, but I also do not have insurance. It would be an expensive visit.
angel_eyes4477 65 Posted June 9, 2012 Do you have an urgent care place near you? They would probably be able to tell you if it is a ststch that was supposed to dissolve or if it is something you should be worried about. If it is the latter, they should be able to get in touch with your surgeon to manage your care. If it is the former, then it will make its way out eventually. I have had many of these stitches not dissolve and make their way out of me after different surgeries. Good luck!

I had to happen after I had a Tummy Tuck and it was no big deal... you just don't want infection.
alb729 11 Posted June 9, 2012 I would atleast call an urgent care place and describe what is obvious...they will tell you if you should wait until Monday or come in and let them take a look at it. I have a rule of thumb...better safe then sorry when it comes to yourself ALWAYS...if its nothing so be it...but if its something..good thing you checked it out....you have come a long way to just ignore this... elcee 3,342 Posted June 9, 2012 It is definitely as stitch. I had the same thing after my hysterectomy. They are supposed to dissolve but sometimes they don't. i wouldn't worry about it. the best thing to do to make sure it doesn't catch and pull is to use clean scissors and snip it close to the skin. If doing that worries you then just put a bandaid over it until you see your Dr.
Mayasgram 351 Posted June 9, 2012 What kind of a Dr can't you call on the weekend. Call him and ask , I have never had this but I can tell you it would concern me. Thank goodness for this group and their experiences I have passed sutures before but not through my belly button. Call and find out from the Doc and then you will feel better.
