Spivak's diet list does say 24-48 hrs liquids, then SOFT foods for 4 weeks.. Don't beat yourself up too much.. it's an innocent mistake, so, step away from the pop tarts and focus on your cottage cheese, yogurt, refried Beans w cheese and V8 to thin it.. :D 3 days out is way early to be vomiting.. be nice to yourself and your new friend, the band.. Good luck!

Guest ASPHALT ANGEL

I would call and make sure that yoru doctor gave you the right info for how lojng you are to be on liquids and then mushy, and then thicker mushy ...etc. I have never heard of liquids for only 24 hours.

I would hate to have you hurt your band because the info you recieved could have been wrong. Let us know...and NO more pop tarts..lol

Here's Spivak's post-op diet from his website. Frankly, I find it much more realisitc than my surgeon's and not geared toward crazy rapid weight loss for good statistics. If I had gone by this diet, my post-op week wouldn't have been hell:

POST-OP DIET INSTRUCTIONS

The post-op diet is divided into 3 stages to allow a gradual adjustment.

STAGE 1: liquid diet for 24-48 hours

STAGE 2: Soft diet for 4 weeks

STAGE 3: Regular diet of 3 meals per day

STAGE 1 (FIRST FEW DAYS POST-OP)

Liquids from the list below. Remember small amounts (4-6 ounces) at a time.

  • GO SLOW
  • WHEN YOU FEEL FULL STOP
  • NO CARBONATED drinks

LIQUID DIET

coffee, tea, diluted fruit juice

broth

Blenderized Soup

Skim milk or Lactaid milk

Jell-O, Popsicle’s

Yogurt

Sugar Fee pudding

Cottage cheese

Applesauce, oatmeal, grits, cream of wheat

V-8 low sodium

Protein drinks, carnation instant Breakfast, pure pro powder (no slim fast)

STAGE 2 (SOFT DIET FOR 4 WEEKS)

Soft foods from the list below can now be added.

You may drink Fluid anytime before you eat. However, no liquids with or after meals (wait 30 mins for the pouch to empty before drinking).

CHEW WELL! The food must be almost liquified before swallowing.

SOFT DIET

Soft fruit (banana, melon)

Cooked vegetables and fish

eggs

Anything with the consistency of baby food

STAGE 3 (after the 4 weeks, REGULAR DIET OF 3 MEALS PER DAY)

Gradually add regular foods and remember:

  • Eat only at set meal times
  • NO LIQUIDS with meals or for 30 mins afterwards
  • Avoid cheap calories
      • Fats
      • High caloric liquid
      • Sweets, ice cream, junk food, Cookies, chips.

Liquids, junk food and sweets do not relieve hunger. Only solid food, which fills the pouch and empties slowly will relieve hunger.

SUMMARY:

Follow three stages of diet plan to allow gradual adjustment.

Eat only at set meal times

Go slow

Chew well

Strawarts,

Thanks for posting Dr. Spivak's diet. I was banded three weeks ago and switched from liquids to soft foods after only the first week, contrary to my doctor's requirement of liquids for 2 weeks, then mushies for 3 weeks.

These past two weeks I've been feeling guilty, although I've had absolutely no problem with soft foods.

Now I don't feel guilty anymore!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
