A Yr Later...what Has Changed???

Recommended Posts

I am almost at my year mark. Yaaay I am down 100lbs and have more energy than ever. I wanted to recap this past yr for everyone wondering. My life IS completely different. I take Vitamins everyday. For example before surgery I never worked out, now I work out 4-5 times a week and I mean kicking ass in the gym. It has became very therapeutic for me. Never thought I would be sayin that lol. Not every change is huge there are a few small ones like the fact that I don't burp anymore. Weird huh? I can't even force one out I honestly don't remember ever burping post operation. I still look in the mirror and can't believe I have come so far. My mind still sees my body as xtremly heavy its nt until I see pictures that it sinks in that this is what I look like now. Some food I can not eat at all because I physically can not and others I choose to stay away from. I have not had soda in a year. Only Water skim milk and Crystal lite. I do not eat bread at all I am not sure if I can or not but I know its not good for u so I just don't even try. No tuna which was my favorite it just will not go down. Ummmm surgery has changed my life for the better and I can do so much more without restriction. Walk up stairs and not be tired, get on roller coasters, ride airplane with out extensions. And these r just small things. Everyday is a new day and you will mess up I have got stuck many times choosing poor foods and I paid for it dearly but overall I feel great and happy and can't wait til I get to onderland. This is just the beginning of my journey. Good luck to everyone.

Congrats on what you have done so far. I am just over 1 year out (1 year, 1 month, actually) and I too am down 100 pounds. I had a minor, minor setback with my port that flipped, but starting on Monday I can get back to my regular activity. My loss has stalled since I haven't been able to exercise, but I haven't gained anything, so that's good.

What has changed? A whole heck of a lot, that's what. I have almost endless amounts of energy I don't get winded taking the subway stairs, I can walk and walk and walk and not tire out, I have dropped around 10 sizes and for the first time since being a teenager many, MANY moons ago, I have been able to shop in the women's department and not in plus sizes only. I can fit in airline seats, I no longer need a seat belt extender, i can paint my toenails, I can wrap a towel around my body and it will close, I can eat normal portions and not 2 or 3 servings. I am satisfied after I eat and I don't have to go and search for food.

All this, and probably some things I haven't even thought of have changed in just one year....and NO fills.

...also, editing to add that I still burp, but i pass gas much, much less. I used to pass gas every time I rolled over in bed or tried to bend over. I no longer do that. My DH is the one who pointed out to me that I no longer do that. I had no idea :P:wacko:

I am a cosmetologist so I stand all day and by the end of the day my feet and ankles don't hurt. My back is feeling better everyday. I am having more energy everyday. I can wear all my clothes again. I feel so much better already I can't believe how great I will feel at goal weight. I might have to put rocks in my pockets so I wont blow away. Haha.

I actually didn't feel it flip or anything. I woke up one morning in pain. it almost felt like I had pulled a muscle. A couple of days later, the pain was too much for me and I went in to see the doctor. He put the needle in as if he were going to give me a fill and it scraped the back of the port. that's how he knew it had flipped. they had done an MRI and it didn't even show anything.

anyway, the procedure to flip it back over was very quick. but the healing process was worse for me than my original surgery. I am just now able to get back to regular activity and the procedure was about 4 weeks ago.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
