Surgery Was Stop Due To Low Blood Pressure

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am really hoping that someone has gone through the same situation or knows someone who has.

I was scheduled for surgery in the February and on the day of the surgery I was put under and brought back an hour later realizing that I didn't have the surgery. I was told that they stopped the operation because my blood pressure went to low and they could not control it, so they decided not to proceed with the surgery.

I am taking Micardis for high blood pressure, Wellibutran and Cymbalta for depression and I was not asked to stop any medications before the surgery. At the time I was told that I should have my blood pressure medication changed and I was not told they wanted a cardic assessemnt plus or minus an echocardiogram unitl I was able to see my doctor. I had blood work and and ECG done at that time and then I was referred to the cardiologist who ran another ECG and said that he didn't feel that an echocardiogram is necessary and didn't feel there was any reason not to proceed with the surgery. The clinic is now asking for an echocardiogram which is another couple of months to see someone and this is now June and I still haven't had the surgery done. I am upset that all of this wasn't asked to be done at one time.

Has anybody gone through this and were they able to have the surgery?

Thank you.

Connie :(

I know its very dissapointing, but its better to be safe than sorry. If there is a underlinning heart condition, it doesn't mean you won't be able to have the surgery, but that they will need to take special precautions. But from the surgeons point of view, they need to know what they are dealing with...I think your doctor made a good call.

When after my surgery the first thing the surgeon told me was " don't take any more blood pressure meds"...I had had a few very low reads during surgery and he said they weren't needed any more. I had lost weight before my surgery and probably didn't need to be taking them anymore.

Had you lost weight before surgery? It might have been enough that you need to have the dosage adjusted.

That would be really depressing but look on the bright side, they did what was best for you and you are still alive. I also used to take Micardis and had to stop a couple of months after surgery as i had an incident where it dropped really low and I passed out and ended up being monitored in hospital. I wish i could say that my BP is now normal but it isn't and I am back on meds again.

I am surprised that they have put the schedule for tests so far out. Obviously you want to be able to proceed asap. I would have thought that the answer was for you to stop taking the meds for a short period prior to surgery but obviously you can only do that if the Dr instructs you to do so.

I am not on any BP medications.. my blood presure is in normal range however I ocasionally experiance a very low BP... it ended up with two ER visits in the last 5 years... I gave birth 6 months ago and as soon as I took the epedural my blood presure went really low I think 80/50 or so.. they gave me a needle and it went back to normal...

I had my surgery on June 1st ( last Friday) when they measured my BP it was 120/40 which is very very low.. because my hauband and my whole family is form a health care background so I know how dangeriuos is to go to a surgery with a low BP so I told my doc I can reschdule if he think it is better.. he said no worry and he told me he will take care after that looks like he gave me a needle or something as while I am in the operation room he told me this will bring your BP back to normal ( not sure though if this is teh regulatr medication or something in speical for that) I told the anestiasa Doc please please please keep an eye on my BP all the time ( gthis is what my sister whom is a doc told me to ask him) and if you think it is better to stop please do I will not be sad... Thanks God all went fine as far as I know I never have a chance to ask the doc what was my BP doing..

I am telling you this story as I were in an opposite situation that I was ablt to stop the operation better than risk my life... So dont worry it is better that they did this as that was for sure the best for you...

Good luck and enjoy ur last days withour ur band :)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
