Vacation Either Before Or After Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi All, My doctor's office has really worked with my schedule to allow me to have my surgery during the three weeks (August 13th!) after I teach summer school and before the regular year school begins. This is the time that my husband and I usually go on vacation and visit our families at the beach. My surgery is scheduled smack in the middle- perfect in everyway except, vacation. My husband is really pushing me to go with him. I'm happy sending him and me staying behind going through the pre-surgery diet at home on my own. Can any of you comment on doing the pre-surgical diet away from home, or recuperating away from home? I can tell he is not happy that I may not go with him, but I think this has to be one of those 'it's about me' times.

Input please!

This is definitely about you! You only get to do this once.

Edited to add................... if I was your husband I would stay home and support you during this time. No offense meant.

There is no way on Earth I'd want to recuperate anywhere but my own home, and close to my doctor and surgery center in the event of any problems! As stated above, you only get to do this once. I agree, ask your husband to try to understand and be supportive.

I think it would be hard to recover away from home. I also think it would be hard to stick to a preop liquid diet away from home when there are so many temptations around. This process can be hard, you do not want to make it any harder.

I would be rethinking going away and saving it for later in the year.

If you were a couple months out of surgery, I would say you would be ok, but everyones pain level is different. I went on vacation 2 months after surgery, no way could I hav done it right after. Now the pre-op diet time, might not be too bad. My problem was trying to find healthy option with real food when I went on vacation, but you can find easy liquid options everywhere. Good luck to you. Hopefully your family will understand and respect your decisions either way. In the end, you all will benefit from your choice to have surgery. My husband absolutely is loving the changes :P

Plus its harder to stay focused on your preop diet when your away and in a different setting with different foods and im sure lots of going out to eat kinda stuff i say kick it at home even if your alone and prepare your self and body for a rebirth! Good luck!

My pre-op diet was 2 weeks of low calorie low carb. Not a liquid diet. My husband and I went away for the weekend to Celebrate our anniversary. It was very difficult to stick to my diet. I did good for the most part but I did get to eat some things that are not allowed in the liquid diet like chicken and other lean meats which kept me satisfied. Even on this diet it was hard to resist. My advice would be to stay home and avoid any possible places that could sabotage your efforts. I lost 14 pounds pre-op but it was a challenge being away from home. I was banded 6/4 and feeling good so it will be worth your sacrifice.

Good Luck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
