Okay' date=' I just surfed around on the complications page... didn't run across any deaths, fortunately. The message I came away with is listen to your body!! One person was posting that she couldn't eat, couldn't drink and she was thirsty ... DUH, WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON A MESSAGE BOARD? YOU NEED TO BE AT THE HOSPITAL SO YOU DON'T GET DEHYDRATED!!!

Just use common sense. After surgery my doctor sent me home with instructions to call with ANY concerns, even if we didn't think it was anything serious.[/quote']

I was in there earlier. I came across the one about esophageal(spelling... Yikes!) cancer and erosion amongst other terrible things. I shouldn't have read it. Cancer has attacked over half of my family. That words scares me and I just had to read how can a band lead to cancer.

It was a bad idea.

I didn't read that, but I would question whether the esophageal cancer was caused by the band itself or by acid reflux as a complication from the band. I know that in rare cases acid reflux can lead to Barrett's syndrome or disease or something, and that can lead to esophageal cancer.

I had serious acid reflux for YEARS before my surgery. I finally broke down and had an endoscopy and fortunately got a clean bill of health, and was given a very expensive prescription medication that worked beautifully. Shortly after that, though, I decided to get the band. The first medication I was able to get rid of was my acid reflux med!!!

Your body will usually let you know when there's something wrong... the important thing is to listen to it!

That's great Toddy! Glad you got rid of that acid reflux med :)

Yes it was associated with acid reflux caused by the band. The thread was titled "my band gave me esophageal cancer". Like I said, it was earlier this morning when I saw it and it just so happen to be at the top of the feed. But I immediately went to the success story thread. Which is where I should've been to begin with.

Complications...you should know about them and be aware of them and get yourself to your doctor/hospital, should you experience any of them! It is important that you understand what you have done and it is obvious that you are concerned about your decision. We all make decisions, daily, that have multiple best and worst case outcomes. For me, doing something about being morbidly obese, outweighed many of those other issues. I am one of the many best case outcomes on this site, I am losing weight, I am no longer obese and I am headed towards my goal weight. Good luck with your journey and keep asking questions.

I was banded on 5/24 and to be completey honest I have felt this way also but all I have to do is think of the reason why I got this surgery in the first place. I am obese and that in itself has many risks to it so to me the possibility of complications just didn't outweigh what good I was doing for myself. Just stay positive.

If you are only barely a month banded, you are probably going through a range of emotions plus your body is also going through physical changes including healing. Follow the rules, stay hydrated, consult with your doctor about your feelings, but just remember you are still new. I am 15 months out and there were days I questioned my decision but now no regrets in happy. I hope you feel better soon:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
